Wolf ammo good enough for 300 meter

Well as a new AR owner and future LE officer I need more practice with my rifle. Well I picked the wrong time to start taking up shooting. I thought I never see the day where I actually witnessed prices go up to the point where i’m willing to max out my credit card to hoard ammo.

For example a month ago I purchased remington umc 55gr .223 for about 5.34 from walmart. After reading a few articles in this forum and others I discovered that prices were going up. I though nah not here. So I called walmart well low and behold they did and it went up to 6.49 a box. .

So I need a cheaper alternative ammo to shoot at about 300 meters effectively my question to you(anyone really) is WOLF brand good enough for this range. I’ve tried it but wasn’t impressed with it but it was cheap but I wonder if i’m sacrificing accuracy with it. I know it won’t be accurate(very good) but I need something that can get the job done. Any help will be appreciated.

Depends on your standards. If a 12-16 inch group at 300m is sufficient, then the answer is yes.

Enought to hit a standard man silhouette the kind LE use for practice.

Personally, I would use the Wolf for close range practice and get something better at 300. I can outshoot the Wolf at 300. YMMV.

It will work be it is not optimal. Plus you will get a notcible POI shift from your good go to ammo.

Out of respect I will change my profile name. There problem solved.

For a second there I thought an actual Delta Force Sniper had wandered onto the boards here in need of our advice. Glad that got sorted out.

Wolf will work fine for practice out to 300 yards but I wouldn’t use it for serious practice. It is under powered and inconsistent. I would imagine that with certain optics an individual could get accustomed to wolf’s lower POI and when shooting regular or higher pressured loadings they would be aiming too high from habit.

I shoot steel with it all the time and none of the steel targets I practice on are smaller than 14" so accuracy is not an issue.

+1 Well said.

Georgia Arms has some 55 gr. fmj for $120 per 500 rounds with $17 shipping, packed loose in an ammo can … am going to order some myself…this is reloaded ammo not surplus made to 223 SAAMI specs…

You might want to do a search on that ammo and see what folks on this site think about it. Some who used it no longer do so.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I had a new one but somebody said they would get pissed off if i had two accounts. I plan on using the wolf ammo in short range practice with metal targets also which are your standard man size. I figured I get 1000 rds of federal and then 1000 rounds of wolf but damn prices are so fing high right now. I need the practice too because its my patrol rifle. I doubt i’ll shoot someone at 300 meters but its still good practice. I plan on getting the new gas piston upper receiver so at least it won’t short storke with wolf since I heard that it is a problem sometimes.

If I were you, I’d put the piston operated upper on hold and spend the money on practice ammo. There are a lot of myths about Wolf ammo, I am yet to see it short stroke in any AR15. I am not saying it doesn’t happen. Wolf is perfectly acceptable for range use and practice, especially when you are picking up the bill.

Practice has more value than the latest piece of gear. If this is really for a Duty/Patrol application I think you would be better served shooting and getting to know the weapon that your life and others may depend on.

Well I plan on getting a new upper receiver since I’d prefer the m4 profile but decided to get the new type of upper aka gas piston. But I’d figure I’d have my qualification upper receiver with nothing then my patrol upper receiver with all the goodies. Is there anything wrong with the gas piston upper though I heard a few good things about them and how the junk(crap foul) doesn’t go into the receiver and helps against possible jams. The girlfriend wants to help me get the uper receiver:D so I don’t have to waste to much money to get it. But don’t worry I’m going to chew up ammo for practice like I do my duty pistol about 300rds every week.80$:( but hey practice makes perfect.
