I have one ar with a Sabre Defence 1/8" twist SS410 barrel.
I just got 1000 Wolf 55 gr hp to shoot and not have to pickup
after range time in the snowy weather. The targets that you see will tell the story. The gun was shot with no brake or flash hider,so nothing
was hitting the bullet when exiting the barrel, crown is good on barrel
I did pulled six bullets from the wolf factory ammo and replaced with other bullets in the second target. All targets were shot at 25 yards
The bullets are bi-metal jackets. Has any one else had this happen to them.Any info will help. Thanks Tim
What diameter are the Wolf bullets? Might be undersized 5.45 mm from the factory.
The wolf bullets are .224…that was one of the first things I checked.
wolf is using a stick power and the charge was 22.0 grs
Just to rule out the slight possibility of a barrel problem…have you tried other ammo with it?
I actually had something similar happen to me not too long ago. At first I thought it was the ammo, but it did the same thing with 3 or 4 brands out of the 7 tried; sent it back and got a replacement barrel, no further problems.
ETA - ah, sorry, I just looked at your other two pics and see the problem went away with different bullets. I would still try a bunch of different ammo though, just to be sure.
I would also try to get some longer range work in with different ammo - even if the keyholing goes away with different bullets, accuracy still might be suffering but you’ll not see it at 25yds.
I’d say crappy ammo your rifle doesn’t like! Stop shooting it and get some better quality ammo! Did you check the wt’s of the bullets you pulled? I’d bet you find a wide variance in the wts! Russian ammo isn’t noted for the quality!

This gun has 2500–to–3000 rounds through it and I have shot this gun from 25 yds to 800 yds ,I can tell you its not the barrel.I have shot fed xm193, xm856 64 gr. tracers, 60 gr.NBT,68 gr.siera match,
80 gr.match siera,75 gr.AMax,50 gr.NBT,55 gr. NBT so as you can read I have used a lot of different bullets, and not a single hickup till now.It has to have some thing to do with their bi-metal bullets.I shot the same ammo through a other barrel (1/8" twist SS 416) and they shot fine.
GunnutAF
I did weigh the bullets and they were 57.0 57.1 56.9 all in that range
Yes the only thing I come up with is I just can’t use it in my one gun,I will have to use it in the other one…I was just wondering if any one else has run in to this.
Rgr that. In that case - I agree with you - wonder if it might just be a bad batch or something - or could just be flat out that this particular barrel just won’t play well with those particular bullets. Perhaps try some different bi-metal ones (different weight/make)?
Should you ever get it figured out, please post and let us know, I’m interested to find out what it might be, thanks.
Well Dan
I have shot over a 1000 tracers through it, they are xm856 64 grs.,
and they are a bi-metal bullet.I just got this ammo because I didn’t want to have to pick them up in the winter time…a pain in the asre.
I will try to figer it out as I think of things to try. The only thing that I can think of is it needs to be a hotter load to keep it from key holing,
They may need to be spun faster…I do’t know for sure.Tim
That’s what I was thinking…a bad lot run. It happens with brass ammo as well.
Try that ammo in another rifle.
send the ammo to me and I’ll try it ![]()
Haven’t had this problem from mine with 55gr wolf HP. Mine is 16" 1/9
.
I have read several places that carbon can build up at the muzzle device causing accuracy to go to heck fast. The barrel can be clean but the carbon still builds up.
Might do a good inspection and cleaning on that end??
.
I did try this ammo in my other rife and it shot fine and that barrel is a 1/8" SS 416. and yes when I started shooting it was a clean barrel.
I checked crown and no carbon build up, that is clean too.thanks for ideas. What I am going to try is… is to pull some bullets and reload
with different power to a hotter load and see if that makes any different. I want to crono some with factory loads and reloaded with
different powder and see velocity I get, that may tell me some thing.
