Curious what consensus opinion is on window mags in real world use – do they add substantially to function, slightly, or not at all?
Little to no benefit IMHO. At this point though, you buy what you can find.

Have both style Pmags and really like the window version that’s on the bedroom gun, as i dont remove the pmag except for occasional cleaning. At the range it’s not a big deal to me.
They add function in that they have a window, aside from that no.
I use them to differentiate between ammo.
Windowed pmags are for ammo voyeurs.
Conus, nope, embrace the sproing. Oconus, I could see some benefit, hey pvt snuffy, put a new mag in.
I take that back, there is one benefit. Dsg arms back order is getting mag level mags out faster to customers.
May or may not be of use to you, but during rifle courses/classes it kind of gives you a leg up if you’re doing any drills for speed/competition.
I’ll always have enough ammo to finish the drill (unless a reload is part of it)…without the windowed mags you would have to remember (ohhhh nooo) ![]()
I only use mine at the range. I can keep track from when the range goes cold easier. Mostly when trying different ammos.
I’m from the school of thought that the more things you add the great the odds of something breaking. Of course now a days you get what you can get, well unless you’re Hitler. http://youtu.be/IEHMZZdSjCg
Since the vast majority of mags are not windowed, it makes sense to me to train in a way that I don’t depend on the window at all.
For casual range use though, it’s handy to have.
I don’t believe it really matters. Around here they are the same price & as equally had to find for less than $45.00.
When I was in Vietnam & had some action you get adrenalin going you don’t have much time to look at a window. They are fun to have & look at, but not necessary.
It’s your choice. Same price I would by the Window.
I just contradicted myself.
I have both kinds and use both kinds. I use them to differentiate between ammo types as was mentioned above. Other than that I’ll take whatever I can get these days.

real world benefit ?? absolutely none. u will know how many rds u have left when she dont go bang when u pull the trigger.
That meme never gets old – marvelous and thank you.
I have all windowed mags, purposely paid extra and bought the windowed ones…i think the only time i use the window was loading my mags and I accidentally put the loaded ones with the empty ones on the table…not one time after they were “on board” in mag pouches or in the rifle have i bothered with the window…i can see the advantage but its never come up…I think if you trained to take advantage of the window then it would be the only leg up on a reg mag.
I just got into stippling my mags and I have done both of them. I prefer the non windowed just because there’s more area to stipple and gives you a little more grip on the mag. Not a whole lot but every little bit helps
The main benefit I’ve found is being able to quickly sort through a bag full of partially loaded mags that inevitability seems to develop towards the end of classes. Secondary to that is being able to check your pouches before a drill to make sure you have enough rounds to complete. Other than that, once its in the gun I don’t think it matters one bit. Overall, I’m really 50/50 on whether I think they’re worth it.

You can buy more mags for the money if you go with the non-windowed (panic buy notwithstanding)…
Only use to me is identifying what is loaded in the mag - the four mags I have loaded with TAP-FPD are easily distinguishable from mags I have loaded from the range. Still hasn’t prevented me from getting them wrong, but it helps.
