Anyone else use this ammo in their 12 ga for home self defense? After some research, I am worried that the slug may over penetrate the target and go through some walls…
If I have to take a shot at max distance of no more than 10 yards what is the best self defense ammo to load up with?
this round along will recieve more criticism than any other i know. some see it as the only round you will ever need and others see it as a gimmick so take everything with a grain of salt. i personally do not care for it, i have some and have tested it and will say that within 20 to 25 yards buckshot is the best choice. if you need more range then use slugs, if you try to use this one at extended ranges (30 yards and out) you will be resposible for the buckshot. no more than 10 yards like you said then definately stick with the buckshot that patterns best in any of these sizes, #1, #0, #00, #000.
we have used them for hogs in thicker areas and they worked fine. definately more recoil than a tactical/reduced recoil slug though. we have noticed some hogs with no apparant buckshot wounds and only the slug hit them. remember this “every projectile has to hit something, even if it wasnt the intended target”
Im swapping my PDX1 ammo for a mix of 00 and 000 buckshot. In my house, if I miss with a round of PDX1 the slug is going to go through at least one wall.
Better to be safe than sorry even though I love the idea of 00 buck and a slug behind them.
I see it as a gimmick load. Yes the effectiveness of a slug is impressive but so is 00 buckshot. I don’t really see what its intended use is. Its range is still limited due to the buckshot; most shotguns are maxed out at 20-25 yards with buckshot as far as patterning is concerned. Maybe I’m old fashioned but to me buckshot is for up close and personal work and slugs are for when you’ve reached the maximum distance of your buckshot pattern. I don’t see a need to mix the two.
Yeah you are right…I’m not sure it’s a gimmick load. It definately has its place if your shooting past 25 yards with a clear background. However, for up close use the slug will over penetrate and go through and hit something in the background unless you have bricks for walls.
So, I switched to O0 Winchester low recoil buckshot. Any shot I take with my shotgun will be at a range of less than 15 yards so this stuff so be perfect. So, come on in all you would be perps…I have multiple weapons to show you on the way in!
