Win 64 gr PP Load Development

I thought I would post some 5.56 NATO load development using the Wincehester 64 gr Power Point projectile. These are popular home defense rounds and I acheived some excellent groups while developing the load.

I was using a RRA mid-length carbine with a NM trigger. Shots were taken at 100 yards on standard 100 YD reduced targets (SR-1). No optics, only iron sights w/detachable carry handle.

I went from 22.0 up to 24.0 gr of TAC. Best group and one represented is 23.5 gr TAC. 10 shot group/charge.

Win 64 gr PP
LC case
23.5 gr TAC
CCI 34 primer
OAL 2.25"

Here is the 23.5 gr group:

Other groups were OK, but nothing like this one. Maybe 1.9 - 2.3 MOA for other groups. The 23.5 gr load is a 1 MOA group with the right bullet hole being my fault. Poor trigger control. However, this ammo only cost about $0.40/round as opposed to the absurd cost of other home defense rounds.

I have some of these and have been thinking of trying some different loads.

Your accuracy is good enough for the distances that I would be using it for. Out where I live I may need to use them for a wild dog, coyote, etc. and I would like to have something a little lower cost to practice with.

Did you chronograph these by chance?

Gel pics, anyone?
Thanks.

Did not chrono…was grouping for accuracy. They should be about 2750 FPS out of a 16" barrel. I will get chrono data the next time I load some. I don’t own a chrono since I have always developed loads for service rifle.

I’ve used the 64 gr. Winchester bullet over 26 grs. Win. 748…a bit over 2600 ft/sec. from a 16 inch barrel with this charge.
