Wild Hog Hunting

Okay, I saw some show about wild hogs and how they’re becoming a big problem in the US and how some areas are having problems keeping them under control.

So naturally I thought that I could help

I would love to hunt some of these beast and was wondering if anyone knows where this is possible or has been on one of these hunts and can offer advice?

Also, can I hunt them with 7.63x39? <evil laugh>

Florida pretty much year round open season

There are more hogs here in Florida then there are snowbirds. The hard part is finding someone to let you on their property to hunt them. The hogs that is!!!

Texas at night with a suppressor year round I think.

One night a few years back I was road tripping up to Virginia around 0400 and I hit one on I-95 near the Georgia/South Carolina line. I was in my TRD Tacoma Quadcab. I pulled to the side, positive that I had major body and suspension damage but luckily it was the tire that struck the thing and there was no damage, just a hell of a mess. They smell worse dead than alive.

I was thinking about doing a hunt also. Has anyone here done a hog hunt? What firearm do you use? Do you stalk them or just sit by bait and wait for them to come to ya? Will they attack you if you get to closs?

Texas has estimated 3-4 million wild hogs, not considered a game animal so you can hunt the hell out of them. They tear up farmer crops bad.

roll out!

Why can I hear the door gunner yelling, “Get some! Get some!”? :stuck_out_tongue:

That was bad ass! I cant wait to show my buddies that video. I want…AM going to Texas to do a bit of aerial shooting!

I think I’ve identified the next M4C get together!

The feral hogs are rooting our place to hell and back bad, they have nearly ruined the berm around the pond destroyed dozens of hybrid orchids and made a general mess. I shoot everyone I can and then shoot them again:D. They have easily cost us a couple K in damages in the last six months. The smaller ones are good eating if you prep & season them well. They also make great coyote bait. Most people that hunt them for food here live catch them with dogs(talk about a rush),or a trap, then pen them up and feed them up for several weeks before serving them up. This guy is about average for a south central FL feral hogs. Never weighed him but those that know more than I say it is an easy 100 pounder.

If your ever down this way email me and you can come kill all you want. 7.62X39 is plenty of gun, they are NOT nearly as hard to kill as people sometimes believe. On private property here in FL they are considered the property owners property and can be taken by about any means one chooses. They are best hunted by knowing their habits routines and AO, none of which is the least bit hard to figure out. Depending on predation pressure they have experienced or lack there of, they will either scatter to the four corners when they see you or merely continue their business like they could care less. BTW we don’t have true wild boars or ones with Russian bloodlines, all of ours are from once domesticated pigs(hence the feral tag). Russian boar are a totally different critter and unfortunately not found here.

Dude I might have to take you up on that offer! Are you in Brandon near Tampa?

Our home is in Brandon, our little piece of heaven(IMO)is in Venus(southern Highlands county), about 20 miles NW of lake Okeechobee.

Gary, I am in Florida (Homestead) to see the parents once in a while.

I would not mind killing some over a weekend.

I’m visit the TPA for work…I might have to stay in the area one weekend

These were emailed to me and from a ranch near Houston if I recall.

I’ve seen bigger than this Ole Boy in S. TX & in South Africa. South Africa has the exact same hog prob as in TX. I use to do hog culls in South Africa as part of my job. We didn’t have choppers, but would “try” & drive them to skirmish lines. Chopper is the way to go:)

Here are some shots of my Lil’Brother’s Hog-Mobile last time I was down at his ranch.

Hog-Cart is electric & at night it is better than a stealth fighter:p (well, it is quiet, but those Oinkers can here you spit at 100yds:eek: so the Hogtacular factor is often higher than the kill factor;))

I think that I might have seen the same Cable TV Show it was called the “Pig Bomb” or something like that on the History/ National Geographic Channel.

After, I watched the show I was thinking the same thing. Too many Pigs, gee why don’t you invite some of us sportsmen over for a hunt.

In the show, they were saying that there are so many pigs that they have migrated into OK from TX. I have an uncle who lives outside Norman, I will have to ask him about that. He has tons of deer, birds, and small game in his backyard!

Back to the pigs, in California the going rate is about $400/ day to hunt on private land. Most of the outfitters do not guarantee an animal, so the fee is for only the ‘opportunity’ to take an animal. I checked with several different outfits and they said pretty much the same thing.

If you plan on using an outfitter most of the guys I know recommended to schedule 2-3 days. The reason is the majority took their animal on the second or third day, also having the additional time takes some of the pressure-off needing to find one the same day. By a different token, two close friends who went on a one-day trip struck-out due to bad weather.

The most numerous Big Game animal taken here are pigs/ hogs. More pigs are taken than deer but the vast majority (over 90%) of them are taken on private land or ranches, according CA DFG. There are a few areas were public access is permitted on BLM land but the success rates are fairly low.

An acquaintance informed me that there is pig hunting permitted on certain military bases here in CA, but there is a restriction for Shotgun Only. If that is the case here, perhaps the military bases in your area or in Texas/ FLA may offer something similar (you must be EX-Mil or go with someone active/ Retired Mil). -cost (self-guided) was less than $100 for 5 pigs & if I recall correctly it was in Northern CA.

I am planning on visiting friends in Texas soon. When I go a rifle or two will be making the trip with me and I am going to see about finding an outfitter or better yet a property owner who allows pig hunting on their property.

But since others may be interested in similar experience, perhaps we should have an M4C Jamboree to Texas or FLA to help-out with the over-population of wild pigs/ hogs. I have a few hundred rounds of .308 ammo to support the cause!

P.S. I used to use a 7.62X39 mm for deer hunting. It kills 150-200 Lbs. deer just fine. I would have no problems using the caliber on pigs myself. I would try for head shots though and use a well constructed bullet. I used to buy Nosler Ballistic tips from GA Arms, they likely still sell ammo in that caliber for hunting.

That is an awesome machine! Your brother is a lucky man, I wish I could hunt in my backyard!

P.S. My friends live outside of Dallas are there any particular areas you might recommend for Hog Hunting around there?

How do you prepare a hog. I’m guessing it’s not like a pig (sausage, ham ect). Does it taste any different?
