Since Colt lost the lawsuit to the exclusivity of the term “M4”, why do people continue to use the term “M4gery”?
Personally I have always seen this a being a silly term and unnecessary.
M4 is a term to describe an AR style weapon - court backed now.
No attacks towards anyone but just looking for opinions on it.
Because mine is not selective fire - it cannot fire burst/fully automatic. 
Good point. I don’t hear anyone call Kimbers 1911 style pistols, so why still M4gery?
Kimber does make 1911s, so does Springfield Armory, Rock River Arms, Les Baer etc. No real differences.
Most us of have semi-auto only M4s and most are 16" guns. I call my 14.5" LMT (registered SBR) just an M4 not an M4gery. Some people call their M1As M14s, but their really not. M14s are select fire.
+1 It is not FULL-AUTO, therefore it will ALWAYS be a MODIFIED COPY (forgery).
Maybe I’ll use SAM4? (Semi-Auto M4)

Actually, the correct term for any series 80 or external extractor 1911 would be “1911 style” as the government M1911 or M1911A1 did not have these features.

Its really easy to avoid the whole nomenclature BS.
16" or shorter is an AR15 carbine.
Bigger than 16" is an AR15 rifle.
“M4gery” is an internet BS term.
I agree with Lumpy, I go to a gun store and mention “…something-something ‘M4’ " and " Whaaat?” is usually the reply … M4 is internet BS made popular @arfcom because the flavor of the month crowd exsists over there and since some members over there , do or buy or wear or shoot whatever is fashionable, that term M4 became popular to descibe the one-up-manship which is the typical banter being posted @that site. Its a term developed to help the ‘Jones’ know who the ‘Jones’ aren’t.
M4 = Colt Model 920 with “S-1-3” (safe/semi-automatic/3-round burst) trigger group.
M4A1 = Colt Model 921 with “S-1-F” (safe/semi-automatic/fully-automatic) trigger group.
Both have 14.5" barrels.
I disagree with most of the posts above. An 5.56mm AR15-type carbine with an M4 profile barrel is an M4 regardless of it being FA or Semi. By the logic that only a Colt or FN FA and a 14.5" barrel barrel is an M4, an “AR15” built by anyone other than Colt isn’t really an AR15. Like people saying “AK47 clone”

Colt makes semi-auto M4 models so the select fire argument is out the window.
I never really believed in the whole “M4gery” issue, but it probably depends on the gun. Just having an M4 profile barrel does not make any carbine an “M4” just becuase it’s trendy. That being said, not having a mere FA selector switch does not make an M4 either.
Why is it I can’t help but think about:
“Revolvers?”

I guess I prefer specifics. I’d rather hear specifics on what kind of rifle someone wants/needs so I’d rather hear “I want an AR-15 carbine with a 16 inch light weight barrel” vs. “I’ve want to build an M4gery…”
It doesn’t bother me if someone refers to any carbine based on the AR-15 platform with a collapsible stock and lightweight barrel (with or without the grenade step) an M4. Call it whatever, impress me by how you shoot it. Impress me by being a “rifleman”. Do that, and you can call your rifle Betsy or Sharlene (sp?) for all I care.
Should I have been calling my 20" AR a “M16A2gery” instead of an AR-15?
An M4 is a carbine made to the specifications in the M4 TDP. It’s that simple, really. As to what’s in that… Well, you’ll just have to ask Colt, for the time being.
. I have no problem calling a semi only AR with the same features as an M4 and calling it an M4. I beleive it’s still an M4 as long as it has all the same features (FA/Burst excluded) anything else is just a carbine.
M4gery also has the HUMOR aspect as well… When I use the word M4gery, it is with a big grin, because it means a carbine with a few USELESS features, such as the barrel cutdown for grenade launcher attachment.

I believe in one of the above posts - M4gery is an internet BS term. It was probably created at another board with a bunch of keyboard commandos that have probably never seen real trigger time.
I’m very happy with M4Carbine.net and would never think of it as “M4gerycarbine.net”
Let BS terms remain where they should. Kill it like we should kill mis-information.

I think that M4 (since the US Gov’t coined the designation) refers to a set of specified features, Colt was proven not to own the terms M4 or M16 and they are generic usage now.
In my own experience FA or Burst is a waste of time anyways, if you need auto fire then you need a SAW gunner.
M4gery is agreeably an internet term created by the prancing pony Koolaid drinkers to describe anything without the “hartford horsey” on it.
