I removed the muzzle brake on my rifle only to find this. Picture is looking through the side that threads on to the barrel.
Can anyone tell me why this happened?
Looks like normal erosion to me. What’s the big deal?
Thats why I asked sir. I’m predominantly new to firearms, 5 years or so. Never really encountered this. So this is completely normal?
Can you describe what happened? It’s not clear from the pic (viewed on my phone).
I had removed the muzzle brake on my rifle as im looking to re modify some things. I was just passing a rag along the brake cleaning it up and looked inside from the end u thread on to the barrel and noticed the wall inside the brake, the opening where the round travels through is eroded as the other member here responded. I had never encountered that and was unsure if thats normal
That looks like normal gas erosion from firing the gun, how many rounds do you have through the barrel? More expensive brakes are made from harder, or heat treated steel to minimize that from happening. If it’s an A2 flash hider they are quite inexpensive to replace.
This appears to be carbon build up in the gap between the end of the barrel and the back of the brake. It is completely normal to see that buildup.
Its a Lantac Dragon muzzle brake. I had thought it to be a higher end device. But being Im reading its normal is good
Difficult to see anything that doesn’t appear normal from your picture. As others have said, all appears normal.
If you don’t mind, what is it that you are “re-modifying” on that rifle? From your own admission on being new to firearms, I would hold off on attempting any type of work and take it to a competent, well known gunsmith/gun shop for any work you may want to have done.
Misused my words. Im just going swapping barrels
Round count?
Edit. What I’m getting at is since you are new, why are you swapping parts. Wear? Accuracy? Reliability?
That’s what it looks like to me too. The inside of a Lantac Dragon isn’t flat like that; it’s beveled. See if you can poke through it with a screwdriver or something.
It’s not the airsoft clone that’s made of aluminum is it?
I’ve removed a few hundred A2 flash hiders at work, they all show erosion like that and usually much worse. It is a jet of hot gasses blasting into that edge everytime you pull the trigger. David
