Personally given the choice between the two I would go with the DD RIS II and the chrome lined barrel. RIS feels better in my hands than the Lite and I prefer chrome lined to stainless. Both are good uppers so either way its a win.
No love for them on here. Id go BCM with the RIS rail 100% no questions asked.
Ive gotten in fights with people on other forums over a similar issue, they claim PDs buy RRA because they are the “best” I say they buy whats “cheaper”…
You won’t find much love for RRA here. They are not a top tier manufacturer, and while some will run it’s often not for long. I believe it’s Pat Rogers who refers to them a “5,000 round guns” or words to that effect.
Also, the RRA upper you linked has the plastic, non-free floated handguards while the BCM uppers are free floated. The BCM’s are also 11.5" barrels which seems to be the sweet spot for a short AR. The RRA upper you posted is a 10.5" bbl and there are only a few companies I’d trust for such a weapon (Noveske, Centurion, LMT). BCM did the homework some years ago. That extra 1" of bbl in front of the gas block gives you 40% more dwell time on the bolt. It’s less wear on the components, a little softer shooting, digests a wider range of ammo, and most importantly is more reliable.
You said this is for a duty weapon - my advice is don’t skimp and this is an area where you tend to get what you pay for. I have a RRA carbine for on duty and I’d ditch it in a heartbeat for something better if I had that option.
Abuse the search function here at M4C. There is a ton of good information - you just have to spend some time reading it. Good luck! I always envy LEO’s who can buy their own long guns for work purposes.
You mentioned in another thread getting a stamp for a no name lower. Now you want advice about a low name upper. You also mention “Duty”. That implies that your life may one day depend on your gun being reliable. Sell the gun show lower and buy a top shelf gun. GH
I’ve heard from lots of different sources that stripped lowers are no different from eachother other than their roll-marks. I am inquiring about complete uppers because I am new to the ar platform. I also do not need nor want a “top shelf gun” I am looking a well built and reliable rifle. I am trying to do this without breaking the bank. I believe both of my goals can be accomplished without purchasing a “top shelf gun”
I think that the post from GH41 was well intentioned, if not well worded.
Your lower, if it’s in spec, should be fine. The upper is going to have your barrel, BCG, sights/optic, rail system, etc… It is a part of the rifle, along with the trigger, where a little extra investment goes a long way. I have build several rifles with BCM uppers and all have performed flawlessly. Honestly, I have heard more about failures from RRA rifles than I have about success. Most of the failures have been in hard use situations. IF this is going to be a duty rifle, THEN those types of failures could be life threatening.
Some of the advice that you will get on this forum will be harsh, and some of it less than lightly delivered, but for the most part the senior guys around here have dealt with these things before and are just going to try and save people from future headaches. Just like anything you read on the internet, know that there is always going to be some bias, but for the most part the bias is in favor of the more reliable and often times less expensive (in the long run) solution.
You shluld stop listening to those sources if you think there is no difference at all other than roll marks for lowers.
Also, you want a well built and reliable rifle, yet you are willing to look at RRA and the like? If you don’t want to spend much, sell your lower and just buy a S&W from G&R Tactical etc.
The problem with RRA, DPMS, Wyndcrap, Bushy etc is they are NOT well made. While one in every 100 may run fine for thousands of rounds, it’s the ratio of crap to good that actually comes out in the long run. Many of us have been in your same shoes in terms of wants/needs and ended up having to redo things due to trying to save a few. IMO if your that tight on cash… don’t be in such a rush and save a few extra hundred bucks to get you something that will last years and not have issues. If your that in a rush you can’t save 300$ maybe it’s best to just stay away from the build for awhile. Now if you just wanted to shoot dirt and didn’t give a hoots I’d say just get a SAA or RRA and be done with it, but you want realibility and well made .
We have 2 Rock River 10.5 sbr on our SWAT team with probably close to 8,000-9,000 rounds on them. Neither has ever had an issue.
With that said I run my own 10.5 Noveske, 11.5 BCM, and a 12.5 Noveske.
To the op I would wait until you can get the BCM with the new BCM rail.
