Which Steiner "Military / Marine" Binoculars to Buy, # 280 -or- # 480 / 481 ??

RE: Which Steiner “Military / Marine” Binoculars to Buy, # 280 -or- # 480 / 481 ??

Hello Guys,

I've been wanting a pair of Steiner's for quite a while now, & with their prices down substancialy at the moment, I think I'm going to grab a pair. My primary use will be as an "all around" set of binoculars, from close to medium range hunting / shooting, to viewing sporting events, etc., etc. Although I'm not partial to the Steiner's individual focus feature, I realize that it's probably a better system once I get used to it. I've narrowed my choices to either the Steiner Model # 280 8x30 - or - # 480 / 481 8x30's. ( The # 481 features the US GI issue M-22 range finding reticle. ) NOW, here's my real question ? Will the less expensive # 280's be adequate for basic, all around useage, or should I pay double for either the # 480 or 481's ? Besides the M-22 Reticle feature on the 481, what's the difference between them ?? The # 480 "appears" to be an better quality version of the entry level # 280's, at least from what I can discern ? I can pick up an NIB pair of 481's for @ $480 ppd, while a NIB pair of the 280's will run me $204 ppd, which I feel is a darn good price !! I guess I need to first determine if I really need the M-22 feature ? Although it's nice to have in a binocular, I'd probably be better served with a middle price range dedicated range finder. OK, I guess I'll hold off on the # 481's, & focus my descision on either the Steiner 280's or the # 480's ??? If anyone would be kind enough to advise between the 2, and or share their comments on the issue, I'd be very much appreciative. THANK YOU & HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

                    Best Regards, dpast32
