Which Rifle/Lower to SBR Colt or ??????

Greetings All,
I have recently been bitten by the SBR bug and before I send off the form 1 I would like a few opinions on which Lower to Register with ATF

  1. Colt 6601 Sporter with a sear block in it.
This particular lower is attached to an unfired 20inch upper at the moment.
Perhaps it should be sold outright?

  2. One of the ARRR15 lightfighter lowers from the group buy off lightfighter.
(The pirate logo is kinda cool)

  3. A POF Billet which has a DD SPR ish upper residing on it at the moment.
My thought was it would be interesting to have a precision upper and be able to switch to a shortie by swapping uppers and not a having a second gun to lug around.

  4. An as yet unpurchased LMT lower.

Thoughts?

I’d just do the pirate thing.

Wow,
that was a fast reply!

I am leaning towards the pirate thing too since it will basicially be a fun gun for me.

I prefer to buy factory SBRs to avoid the engraving.

+1, 6933… You’d never regret it!

Noted.
However- if you only had the options I described above, what would you use?

I would start with a stripped lower (not sure if any of your choices are still stripped or not) just to save myself the headache when shipping it out to be engraved.

I don’t think I’d use the Colt just because it’s part of a complete gun.
I don’t think I’d use the billet just… well just because.
I don’t think LMT is doing stripped lowers so…

I’m not familiar with the Lightfighter lower you spoke of (have a link?) but assuming you’re buying it, or have it, as a stripped lower I’d go with that one.

If the lower is added on the NFA list by the manufacturer there is no more markings other than the factory markings. Make and register your own SBR with the NFA and you have engrave the name and hometown of the person who built/registered the gun on the lower receiver.

Well Rob,
I would say you nailed it.
The lightfighter lower was made by(finished by??) a place called S.N.S. Industries which I know nothing about.
I only know the pirate logo is wayyy neato!

BTW, just so you know Rob,
I like your thought process.
Very logical.

If you plan on registering the stripped lower, you may want to assemble it first, so you know everything’s in spec.

It would suck to spend $200 and register a lower and then discover a hole’s too big or in the wrong place.

You might be able to get your money back if you never actually make a SBR with that lower, but I’m sure it would be a hassle.

Not a bad point at all, and one I hadn’t considered.

I personally would go with either LMT or Colt to register as a SBR.

Keep in mind that if you register a lower from a company that builds a sub standard product, you wasted $200 and are basically stuck with a sub standard NFA lower.

I have had lowers that the hole for the pistol grip screw was too far to the rear leaving a large gap between the front of the pistol grip and the receiver directly behind the trigger. In the early 90’s I purchased a 20" DPMS complete rifle. I later purchased a complete M4 upper from DPMS for this same gun and the upper would not fit on the lower (hole placement was off). After going being sent 3 different uppers, DPMS finally had me send the lower back to the factory. They refunded my money for the M4 upper and sent me back my out of spec lower.

As was mentioned above, if you get a stripped lower, assemble it and ensure all the holes are the correct dimension and in the correct places before using that serial number on your Form 1.

If you are going to go though all the hastle of a form 1 and $200, do it right the first time.

Gents,
Sage advice RE assembling and checking the lower to be in spec before registering it.

It would totally suck to find out it was fubar after registering it.

Does LMT sell an SBR model for civilian purchase like Colt does?

Also, Noveske does, if that’s an option for you.

Noveske Diplomat

That Noveske looks nice but my needs will be pretty well served by an 11.5 inch barrel MK 18 ish build that a pal is doing for me.

Only thing I need to figure is which lower.

As long as the Pirate lower works with some other uppers, I will more than likely use it an an SBR canadate because it looks cool.

CDI ya know?

CMMG has a good SBR option. If you want to step up to premium brand, Noveske does nice rifles as SBR’s.
