Which muzzle device?

I just ordered a Colt 14.5" SOCOM barrel and I’ll need a extended muzzle device to pin and weld on the barrel.

I have experience with A2 flash hiders on 16" carbines and 20" rifle. I also have a BCM BCMGUNFIGHTER Compensator Mod 0 (regular length) on my Mk12ish build. I’m not really sure which one I like better. Any thoughts on that?

Here’s what I’m looking at BCM-A2X-Extended-A2-Flash-Hider-Suppressor or BCM BCMGUNFIGHTER Compensator MOD 1 - 5.56 Extended.

I don’t want to $pend more then what a BCM BCMGUNFIGHTER Compensator Mod 1 (extended) will cost.

Thanks, NYH1.

Between the two, I voted for the extended A2. On a general use rifle, I don’t appreciate the pros of muzzle breaks enough to outweigh the cons of the blast of a muzzle brake such as the Gunfighter compensator.

Are you wanting an A2 style?

Keeping this in mind: I don’t want to $pend more then what a BCM BCMGUNFIGHTER Compensator Mod 1 (extended) will cost these are about thirty to forty bucks cheaper and are two of the best rated flash hiders out there:

Smith Enterprises Vortex G6A2: https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/muzzle-devices/flash-hiders/ar-15-vortex-g6-a2-flash-eliminator-22-cal-prod54941.aspx

JP Enterprises 556L: https://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPFH-556L

Ddin’t know if anything non-birdcage was on your radar.

That’s a tough one. I like them both. FWIW there’s no concussion off the Gunfighter, but it is a little “barkier”. I don’t mind a little more bark because I surely wouldn’t shoot either option without ears on.

After further review… I voted extended A2 because the SOCOM barrel doesn’t need any “comp” type help. It’s gassed perfectly, and has enough meat to absorb recoil.

I have both A2 and BCM Mod 0 devices on 16" guns and prefer the Mod 0 generally speaking - it does reduce muzzle rise and recoil a bit.

The BCM comps erode noticeably, supposedly stopping after they reach a certain point. The A2X really will never show wear, and it’s a “permanent” device; maybe that is a consideration for you.

My Mod 0 comps are a little “louder” than my A2, mainly noticeable when I am beside someone else shooting my guns.

If you want to stay with a closed end unit, there is also the YHM Phantom https://yhm.net/phantom-5-56mm-comp-flash-hider-1165.html

I have a non-mount AAC Blackout pin/welded on my LMT 14.5 - https://www.advanced-armament.com/BLACKOUT-Non-Mount-Flash-Hider-556mm_p_449.html
The blackout is nice, little concussion and it’s very effective as a FH.

Not that you asked for more options…

Andy

I personally like the BCM A2X. I have two on two pinned Colt 14.5 barrels.

Thanks for the replies.

I too haven’t noticed any increased concussion with the Gunfighter muzzle device over the regular A2. I will say that my Colt MT6400 (civ. vers. of LE6920) with a non-muzzle device 16" barrel, has more concussion the my 18" barreled rifle using the Gunfighter. I noticed that the other while my son was shooting them one right after the other. You want to talk about muzzle flash…beach ball size flashes without a device.

NYH1.

Thanks.

Yeah, I want to stay with a A2ish looking type device. Plus JP says they can’t ship theirs to NY, which is absolutely untrue.

Like the above poster said, the Yankee hill closed end one is nice.

I appreciate the reply and the added options. Kind of leaning towards the A2X.

Thanks, NYH1.

Yeah, I’m leaning towards the BCM A2X.

The flat end one looks like the A2X.

Thanks for the replies, NYH1.

Found these two flash hider shootouts-

Part 2

I think I’ve seen that one before. Good stuff.

My takeaway is the old A2 actually competes pretty well.

Yep, that is upon what I based my recommendations. I hadn’t copy/pasted part 2 - thanks!

I wish they had run the SilencerCo ASR Flash Hider through the test - aside from A2’s on base builds, they are all I run.

ETS: I have a couple KAW Valley Linear Comps and KAK Flash Cans on pistol caliber builds and the such.

Cool, I really appreciate that!

I guess I should have mentioned this in my initial post. My goal is to keep the barrel and MD combination as close to “just over 16 inches” as I can. I noticed some of them are up to and over 3 inches.

Thanks, NYH1.

YHM has what you need at a reasonable price. A2X would be my second choice.

26 Inf has it right if you are looking for the best flash suppressor (plenty of videos available testing flash hider efficiency). I am using the Smith Enterprise Vortex on my Colt MARC 901 (OEM) and pinned on my Colt 6944 (14.5") so I can still mount a bayonet (old school).

The real question is if you want to attach a suppressor - that will narrow your choices considerably. If you do, and SureFire is you choice, then consider the SureFire Warcomp - they have both open and closed tine models.

I meant to mention on my earlier post - BRT’s Covert Comp (linear compensator) is 1.95" long, looks like an A2 FH without the slots, provides some flash supression, and IME reduces blast and concussion for the shooter and also from the side.

I had one on a 20" and then 18" barrel which I just installed on a 11.3" pistol I plan to shoot today.

Just a thought.

Andy

That was my goal too.

The A2X puts that bad boy right at 16.1 and is only about 1/4” longer than a standard A2.

I’ve shot my BCM with mod 0 GF comp indoors and it didn’t seem too concussive to me, but I overheard a guy in the lane next to me ask his buddy what the hell I was shooting. So maybe it’s a bit “barky” but it’s not my problem.

It definitely doesn’t kick up much dust when shooting rollover prone etc.
