Which 870 and what Price?

I am looking to replace my Mossy 500 with an 870. Which model of 870 should I get and what is the current price range on them. Obviously it should be one of the police models, but are there more than one “P” models of 870? What would be a “good” price for one and what would be too much. Not sure how much they are going for lately.

My advice? Troll some pawn shops looking for an older Wingmaster or Police. You’d be surprised what you can get there, and it’ll make a great base gun to send off to Wilson/Scattergun or Hans Vang.

Several pawnshops in my area have used Wingmasters for 200 or less. Most are marked 199.00 but cash is king you know.

I would buy the cheapest 870 you could find (Minus a Special Field model). Then just sell the parts you don’t need/want to fund turning it into your custom 870.

The 870 Police is too expensive for what you get over the basic Express (I say that as a 870P owner). With the exception of the machined ejector, you can replace every part on the Express with Police parts for much cheaper than straight buying a Police model. The matte blue finish isn’t as nice as the parkerization on the 870P, but liberally soaking it in CLP every few months or so will prevent any rusting (same for the 870P).

The basic 18" Express Synthetic with the +2 extension is a great buy for $330 NIB at most places. The only thing I would do is just add a machined extractor for $10, and just shoot it.

I’ve owned 2 Wingmasters, 2 Police, and 4 Express 870s over the years (Down to just 1 870P now). The Wingmaster & Police models were smooth as silk, but a Express will smooth out after a few flats of shells. They are not very pretty, but they are still 870s.

I have several tacticals, I really like all of them. I think the best buy they having going is the new Tactical A-TACS version. I’m looking forward to the new 887 tactical as well.

I got the 870 Tactical and Put some scattergun Tech Ghost ring on and it is a awesome shotgun…as stated above you can find the parts to add to your 870 and turn it into a police model cheaper than a P model itself.

I will see how much I can get selling my Mossberg 500 and then use that as a base fund for the 870 project.
