I’m gonna SBR something and get a suppressor. Searching here for “sound suppressor” “silencer” or any combination of other words with those words brings up every thread on the board… so i’m posting for guidance.
Who’s making the goods? i’d like to go as short as possible- I wanna try to SBR at 11" and it’d be righteous if I could keep OAL including suppressor at around 14.5"
i don’t want to spend $2,000 on the can, but i also dont want something made out of tinfoil. sound reduction needs are simply to be able to shoot with muffs only and not have to worry about furthering my cumulative hearing loss.
is this a good can? price and size seems right http://www.opsinc.us/product.php@prodId=7thm4mbs.html db reduction is better than earplugs. that’s a lot of weight, though- how does that compare to others (weight)?
Ops Inc. makes great cans. I haven’t seen the 7th model but I do agree the 21oz weight is a bit much for an SBR where you are looking for a short and light can. Personally, I would look at the Ops 14th model. It is short/light and sound reduction is acceptable especially since you will still be using muffs. Contact Steve at ADCO Firearms for more info about the different Ops models. I’m sure others will chime in regarding other great brands. It would be great if you can find folks that live around you with several different makes/models so you can feel and hear the difference.
the ops inc i linked above stated it adds 3.5" to OAL, so i thought that’d be righteous. titanium seems like a good choice- nice and light. but i cant find a weight listed for any of those- know how much the warthog weighs?
I wouldn’t say “don’t like” it’s just that there are issues with the brake/mount and the ability to shoot unsuppressed. In short, it’s unbearably loud, even for the shooter, without the can on it. But the A2 birdcage mount doesn’t protect the blast baffle, and has significant POI shift vs. the brake mount.
I’ve seen the flash hider OpsInc mount and it’s pretty small. I like the OpsInc 15th model and will probably buy one for a SPR that I only shoot suppressed.
That is effectively what’s happened. I have one SBR that stays with the can and has the muzzle brake mount, and another that is almost never suppressed and has the birdcage mount. Ops has a vortex style mount as well but I haven’t messed with it yet.
I’d like to be able to have one gun that did both jobs. If buying today I’d probably be trying to buy a Noveske 10.5" N4 with Switchblock, and an AAC M4-1000 or -2000.
Ti cans don’t last very long if you get them hot. OPS would be my choice for you, they even have a moderator that adds about two inches and you can mount the moderator, 14th, 15th and 16th on the same adapter. Gotta use a break, which means suppressed full time.
AAC measures from the front of their two inch long flash suppressor. OPS measures from the muzzle. OPS is therefore quite a bit shorter.
Did a lot of research on the Ti hot fatigue myth, and that’s just not the case with the Ti used. You have to get the Ti much, much hotter than is possible with most weapons and you’d find that the barrel would deform long before the suppressor will.
Recall the SR-71 Blackbird was almost entirely Ti, exposed to 3K+ temperatures and was actually stronger after every flight.
thanks for the input, gentlemen… i think i’m gonna go with a m4-2000 and as short a barrel as i can get my grubby hands on… unless i can somehow find an N4 shorty in stock somewhere, it doesn’t seem likely to get ahold of one from noveske any time soon.
hmm… actually, i dont think noveske sells the n4s by themselves, do they? i know they sell the stainless barrels, but im pretty sure the only way to get an N4 is to get a complete upper- no?
I am in the same boat, building a SBR and looking for a short can. I am looking at getting a HTG Eureka 3 ( http://www.htgsilencers.com/RIFLES/Rifles.html ). It is the shortest suppressor I have found although it does not list length past the barrel it is only 4.58 in long. I don’t have any personal experience with it, though.
I would only buy a suppressor from the larger companies. There are a lot of “boutique” suppressor companies out there with totally unproven track records, and lots of claims from people with something to gain and/or people that already made a purchase and either want to rationalize it or don’t want to admit they made a mistake.
Ops, Surefire, Gemtech, AAC, and on very rare occasions, YHM. If one of them don’t make it, I don’t need it.
I researched the issue and belabored the decision to death. I ended up with an AAC M4-2000 (mod 07). I really like it, except for the $95 QD flash hiders… I need a couple more, but that’s $200 I’d rather spend elsewhere.
Here it is mounted on a 10.5" barrel w/ fixed front sight base.
I shoot this rifle suppressed and unsuppressed, and I like the fact that the QD mount is a nice phantom style FH that doesn’t (a) increase the sound to the shooter, and (b) act as a flash enhancer when the suppressor is not attached.
