Just got a new SLR 107 for $835 out the door. Went straight to put some rounds down range and i gotta say I was pretty impressed. I wanna give this a real open minded run so I’m gonna run it as my main rifle for a year or so. I’m gonna run it in the next three classes I’m signed up for and give it a real try.
So if any of you AK guru’s know anything I should keep an eye out for let me know. Also i want to get a new chest rig for AK mags so any recommendations would be great. Right now i have for Bulgy waffle mags and 2k wolf. Ant ammo and mag recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks alot guys.
I’m going to warn you right now that you’re probably going to sell off your ARs once you start running your 107 and get familiar with it. You’re going to find out that all that internet chatter about the AK being an “inferior platform” is bullshit and that with practice you can run the AK efficiently.
I’ve seen it first hand; 16 shooters running a variety of AKs just as well and in some instances better than I’ve seen a class full of AR guys. With a few minor mods like a Swift Safety and a Vickers Sling you’ll be good to go. If you want to run an optic you have options like an Ultimak rail. Plus you get the added benefit of the famous 7.62x39 round. See my signature
If I was a betting man I’d put money on you becoming very attached to the AK and finding out that you can run it just as well as anything else.
Here’s how I set my SLR-107CR up and I’ll run this setup in every class I do:
Yep, I sold off my brand new Colt 6920 with upgrades in favor of the 7.62 x 39 AK.
I have a Vickers sling and a Krebs safety that need to be installed.
I have several brands of ammo, Bulgarian circle 10 waffle mags and Chinese steel mags & drums.
Copes has a good deal on Russian Golden Tiger ammo - get it while you can.
i can see myself getting very comfortable with it. I’m trying to learn run an AK like an AK and not like an AR. I like that setup a lot M4arc, thats what I was thinking of doing optics wise. Do you guys have a good vender for AK stuff?
Bought 2K more ammo and 10 more mags today. I’ve been expirimenting with slings here and am curious if there are any practical advantages to the stock sling as I’ve seen alot of hard core AK guys swear by them, I’m use to the Vickers but as I said before I want to run the gun practically, Like an AK not an AR, i see in the pics you guys are running the Vickers so what do you think about the stock slings?
By the way which aimpoint micro mount are you guys running?
Red Star Arms, the best single hook triggers money can buy, and they also sell a replacement for the wire that holds the AK trigger pins in place. All my receivers were cut for double hook units from the factory, so I use original, or US double hooks. http://www.redstararms.com/
This is my opinion on slings: for collectible AKs in your collection run the right sling (from that country and time frame) but for practical AKs that you plan to run in classes or use for SD run a Vickers sling.
For most people it’s strictly a cost issue. The T-1 is only “better” if you need 30 ft. waterproof depth and/or NV compatibility. Otherwise it’s a wasted expense.
I wish my Lancaster was one of those 107s. I’ve been running my Lancaster since January in every match and/or training class I’ve been to. It’s satisfying to beat other shooters running ARs with the “inferior” AK, but I will go back to the AR when this year is over. I see no benefit to fighting through the things I don’t like about the AK just to be different. Or cheap. So far I haven’t come up with any other reason than those two, for my purposes, to choose the AK over the AR.
I’m looking forward to my first class with it, so far I’m not bothered or feel like I’m fighting anything to me it’s just a different system to learn. I gotta say i underestimated the system from reading others opinions about them, it just seems to fit me just right.
