I’d like to put a red-dot on my new 6920, but want to use a rear iron with adjustable elevation. How do you think this would work with the lower 1/3 co-witness using the Larue mount? Would it be better to remove the T1 for those times when I want to shoot longer range (400+ yards) or will the view thru the T1 be ok (I’d turn the dot off)?
Or would it make sense to put the T1 on an angled mount (45 degree) and just rotate the rifle for close range targets?
The 6920 will be for recreational use. Mostly blasting at targets under 100 yards, and also some long range shots over 400 yards. Shooting will be done out in the hills, not competitions. Only other use would be house/camp defense.
If you guys have other suggestions for a different optic that would be great too. The 6920 is only my 3rd black rifle and I still have more to learn about the AR15. The first was a 16" BM with removable carry handle, and the second a 16" DPMS 308 with 2-7x mounted with an SPR. Both of those carbines have found new homes, but I still have the 2-7x.
I’d like to keep the 6920 lightweight. The scope and SPR on the 308 were heavy and I don’t think I want a 1-4x on the 6920, but maybe there are other options. An ACOG is appealing, but I don’t have any experience with them and I am concerned that they would be too “slow” for the close range targets. I’ve done lots of research here and elsewhere, but it seems like most people choose to set-up their carbines for close range or medium range, but usually not both.
Thanks for the links. Although they discuss mounting position (front to rear position) and merits of absolute co-witness, they don’t address my original question of shooting at long distances using an elevation adjustable rear iron while still looking thru the T1. Or the possibility of using a 45 degree mount for the T1.
I may have to try it myself since most of the threads deal with close range shooting. I’d like to have the dot for quick target acquisition at close range, but be able to quickly shoot at medium/long range.
Mount the Micro T-1 in an LT66X Tall Mount at the front of your upper receiver. Then ignore your iron sights simply look over the top of your rear iron sight and you won’t even notice that is there. Bottomline is that the set up you are describing is used by a lot of operators without issue.
