Where To Buy S&W Classic N Frame Square Butt Target Grips For Under $200?!?...

So I recently got a nice P&R 27 to replace the Combat Magnum 19 I sold years ago.

But it’s got some custom goofy grips on it that need to go. When I had to find replacement grips for a vintage 29 not very long ago I was able to find them for about $100 and I thought that was a tad high.

Everything I’m seeing is about $200, what is the deal?

Looking for classic cutouts and not football indentations. Would prefer genuine S&W if possible. But willing to settle for a quality copy, especially if it has S&W medallions.

This is going to be a collector / shooter so I want to return it to correct config and honestly I love those old coke bottle grips, feel great in the hand.

Check out Eagle Grips. The collectability of S&W always keeps stocks priced a little high.

Want grips with the speed loader cutout on front grip and not the football indentation.

‘N’ frame? If you want to go ‘old school’ you need to go to ‘S’ pre-fix serial number! Check eBay, S&W ‘coke bottle’ grips.

Not trying to go that old school. I just have a thing for P&Rs, especially N frame .357s. Part is nostalgia, growing up all the instructors were “combat magnum” guys and part of it is design and execution.

I know everyone is all about Colt Pythons, but I think S&Ws are art. N Frames also manage that round so well I can actually hit things I shoot at.

I think pictures would help, I’m having difficulty picturing what you are looking for…but I’m also not a revolver expert.

My 27-1 has original football grips but it sounds like you’re not looking for those…

I bought these for this one from Altamont, but not sure if these are what you are looking for either?

If you’re entertaining options that aren’t original, I would look at what Altamont offers. I’ve used them for 1911 as well as S&W grips and they are very high quality. They even offer grips with medallions.

The Altamont grips in the bottom picture are exactly what I’m looking for (with speedloader cutouts), but doesn’t seem they offer those same grips anymore.

The checkered engraved isn’t what I want. I want some pretty much exactly like your bottom photo with checkered grips, medallions and diamond shape around the grip screw.

Herretts has something similar on their new website but I don’t know much about it since they’ve restructured. I haven’t bought any stocks from them in a few years but remember that they were prices well below $200 for standard models.

Here’s my pair of 27s. Are you looking for grips like the top one?

I just realized i have the nasty originals from the model 19 (AU Police surplus) with the Altamont grips above stashed somewhere and as I recall they’re exactly like the one’s on the pistol on top above. Too bad they’ll be too small for your 27 or I’d just give them to you and let you try to clean them up.

Exactly like the bottom one with the cutout so speedloaders have better clearance.

Appreciate the thought but wrong size and I’m looking for nice, newish grips. Old smiths look to good.

I think those were called combat magnums

I have a 28-2 with the grips like Arik’s bottom pistol except it has the football. Looking at them closely, I believe careful work with a sanding drum would get you what you need. The top line of the football appears to be a perfect match with your cutout and would make a nice guide. add linseed when your done and no one would know.
Would that make your search easier?
Mine is a shooter and I run rubber grips, but I may do this to the originals. On mine the wood is good but the finish is bubbled from age anyway, so steel wool and oil is needed anyway.

Combat Magnums are the 19 series which is a K frame .357. What we are talking about is target grips which come in two variations, football indentations and the ones with the cut outs. The footballs are also known as coke grips and are probably correct on a 27.

But I learned to prefer cutout target grips with the 29 and want my 27 to match.

Ah! Gotcha! I know enough about Smiths to know what I’m looking at. I even used to know S# ranges for some more common models but I never got into grips. Always thought “combat magnum” we’re the ones that looked like that. Obviously scaled up/down depending on frame and “cokes” were the thin ones with the medallions

Have you looked at any of the Hogue offerings in wood?

Amazon is also has some available for decent prices.

Craig seems to have a waiting list, but there are lots of options.

These are most likely expensive, but nice. I have a set on one of my P7’s.

Then there are these.

But I’m probably just repeating everything you’ve already seen. Might try posting a WTB add over on the S&W forum as well.

Also, this cat does custom grip work and at least used to have medallions. ksdgripsusa at gmail.com

I’ve looked at a lot, Don’t want anything with finger grooves or otherwise non standard / custom.

I’ve got some “maybe” options from this thread which is more than I had when I started.

Some of the above linked options

Ok, to help keep things clear. This is what I’m after.

The Craig grips are sorta close, but I’m not trying to get too exotic. I could live with rosewoods but would want the classic checkering and medallions.

Factory S&W seem to be $200, Alta Mont grips have something really close but unfortunately they are also engraved.
