Well since NY state is still under the AWB regulations I am looking for a place to buy an AR that is AWB compliant I did find one local store here in CNY with an excellent selection but I want to keep looking before I settle on what I want if anyone can help refer me to a place im in the syracuse NY area if thats of any help thanks in advance
Exactly what was it that they had in their line up? Is this going to be your first AR?
If so, browse around the site to see reviews, experiences and info on different products.
Youll see that some of the more common ones are simply heavily marketed to the general public and are in reality not all that great. Youll also find a lot of brands that you may have never heard of are actually top tier.
Also, I suggest looking into NY rules and regulations on assembling and ordering online as you may end up wanting to build with all the parts you like.
I used to live in NY, before moving down to Fl, and owned a few AR’s. Contact RRA, or Bushmaster, as both of them have made NY, compliant rifles for me. The RRA, was an entry tactical model, just with a muzzle brake, pinned m4 stock, and no bayo lug. Same deal with the bushmaster. Any shop should be able to get one for you. Both of those companies were more than happy to configure those rifles so they were legal as far as NYS laws are. I also got from Robinson Armament, a NYS compliant XCR. It had a muzzle brake, and non-folding stock. I never saw anyone else with an XCR, while i lived in NY.
Find out exactly what features you can or can’t have. Then take a look at BCM or GandR Tactical and see what it would cost to do a build-either a full one or partial.
It’s been my experience that ban states tend to charge more for their rifles. Additinally they will probably only carry a few options like Bushmaster, DPMS, RRA and S&W.
In the current market there is no need to settle for “almost as good as”.
I live in NY close to the border with Montreal so not even close to the Syracuse area! But, when I was on the search for an AR I had to travel down to Albany to find a place that suited my needs. I knew what I wanted after lurking on the site and the only stores around me offered RRA, DPMS, ect. I will send you a pm with some info if you are interested in contacting them
Sent you a PM guy
Thanks for all the help its really appreciated I just want to explore all avenues before I buy. I have come to the conclusion that since I live in NY im going to pay a bit more for what I want I found brand new colt LE6920 at Marks outdoors in AL for 995.00 but when I approached an FFL here about buying it he said forget it with it being Law Enforcement stamped no one will bring it here for you. The shop I was in today had an excellent variety and I fell in love with one gun it was a Bushmaster A2 with quad rail bipod hogue grip with scope and aftermarket tactical stock dont remember the details on the scope or stock but it was priced at 1225.00 everything seemed to be right around 1000.00 with some entry level Del tons or Daltons at 800.00 As you can tell Im definetly a newbie in the world of ARs so im trying to learn as I go thanks again for your help
Ayayay… Keep researching. the site is full of threads that’ll teach you a lot about the different brands you just mentioned. Also, checkout “Rob’s Chart” it has a lot of useful info on what brands have up to or not up to spec.
Dont get swayed by a rifle complete with scope and rail and what not. Preferences change over time and you’ll come to realize that the ones that came with your rifle are not what youre going to want months from now.
Surf the site to see which ones are the real top quality brands (ARs themselves and all other components and accessories.) and after some rounds down range, you’ll see which ones will suit your needs best.
Again, at the risk of sounding redundant, do your research. I, as well as many here, have bought before researching and have simply taken it as a life lesson. ![]()
Dont rush it especially since the cost of owning an AR in your state tends to be quite high…
I would say find another FFL. AR6920’s are totally legal regardless of the LE markings. However, that particular model may not be in compliance with NY law. I suggest finding someone knowledgeable and find out what features are/ aren’t allowed. Until you have done that you are just wasting time.
I would personally not buy a Bushmaster and especially not at that price. For that price you can get a DD M4. I would not buy Delton either.
Look at this; http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Daniel-Defense-p/bcm-urg-mid-16%20ddl12.htm
For about 925.00 a complete upper that when coupled with a lower receiver will be top notch.
Again. The market has made a correction and there is plenty out there. You need to just determine what you can or can’t have and then make an informed choice.
You can pick up a Colt MT6400C for about the same price as a 6920 right now.
Barring that I would look in to getting something like the S&W M&P15FT.
I think Dick’s Sporting Goods or Gander Mountain will special order it for you or at the very least handle the FFL transfer if you get it online and have it shipped.
Those would be the 2 most viable off the shelf options, I would avoid the Bushmaster and RRA rifles.
The above would not be a good idea.
Buds, give Buffalo Gun Center a call. They can fix ya up.
An off the shelf 6920 would be in violation of AWB due to threaded muzzle, bayonet lug and a collapsible stock.
You have a number of options:
- Buy a post ban lower. Attach a fixed stock to the lower. Then buy a pre-ban style upper from BCM, etc, and have a gunsmith make it into a post ban upper (grind off bayonet lug, permanently attach muzzle break) before attaching the two together. OR
- Buy a pre-ban lower, and you can put any upper or collapsible stock you want.
I would also recommend NorthEast Shooters as a site that focuses on the North East and has a comprehensive legal forum.
Build your own. Pick a fixed stock you like (A2, A1, RRA entry, ACE, etc), chop off the bayonet lug, and have ADCO perm. attach any muzzle brake you like on your barrel. GTG.
Yeah build your own, if you want Bayonet lug, collapsible stock, and flash hiders look for a preban receiver. Earlier this year I bought a preban SGW on Gunbroker for $500 had it sent to my FFL who charged me $20 for the transfer-then sold off all the parts which essentially paid for the stripped receiver and then rebuilt it with good quality parts from G&R (BCM and DD). When I was done it ended up being cheaper than a post ban from any shop I’ve seen in central or eastern upstate NY. (I think it ended up at around $800-$850 when I was all done horsetrading.)
There was a guy in western NY selling preban PWA stripped receivers earlier this year- maybe he has some more.
Good quality AR’s aren’t hard to build- you learn more by doing it yourself and if you get a preban receiver you don’t have to worry about any AW ban legal issues in NY.
If you need help or tips feel free to email me, I can give you some pointers.
Like I said in the PM if your willing to travel a bit, you could probably get the gun you want and have it either brought to compliance, or buy the compliant version. There is a gunsmith in Kingston NY that will make an LE gun compliant. I have also seen compliant Colts out there.
nothing like being behind enemy lines! Bushmaster & Remington make NY compliant AR’s. 10 round mags or less, no flash hiders (muzzle breaks are OK, if they meet ATF regs, and must be permanently attached), no collapsing or folding stock. you have to have it compliant when it reaches your FFL, your FFL can not do the changes for you. if you live close to a Sports Authority or Dicks, they carry Remington AR’s. also, in NY the only way you can get a Colt is if it was built before the first AWB went into effect.
Then why is it I can go down to a chain dealer and buy three different Colts? Sorry buddy but your wrong. Why is it that an LE dealer when I was pricing offered to make a LE model compliant for me if I wished to purchase it?
stamped colt and made after the ban is illegal in NY, no ifs or buts about it! not only is my uncle a NY gun dealer, I had my lawyer look into this for me as I didn’t want to do jail time or lose my pistol permit. the law in NY state says no guns by colt or versions thereof. so technically if some anti gun dipshit could get a good law firm, they could go after all AR style weapons in NY. it’s a bit tricky how one interprets this law, as its really not a black & white subject. But, I can tell you this, the only colts you can have in NY are one made Pre-ban. if they are not, I wouldn’t take the chance on buying one. God forbid the ATF shows up at your door and want to see your armory. next thing you know you’re in the federal pound you in the ass penitentiary. also, if it is pre-ban colt, you can’t change anything on it, like if it had a A2 stock and you added a nice new Magpul ACS, it would be in violation. trust me, my lawyer & I really looked into this. the sad thing is, the law only hurts the people who follow it. I’m sure the gang bangers aren’t concerned if they got a pre-ban version or not. I bought my SR-15 and had to have it made NY compliant before it shipped to my uncle, and that was told to me right from the police departments mouth.
You need to get a new lawyer…
Colt made plenty of neutered rifles for sale during the ban with fixed A2 stocks, non-threaded barrels and no bayonet lugs.
The NYS AWB Law was a copy of the Federal AWB except that it didn’t have a sunset provision.
I believe the CT and California AWB Laws banned Colts by name.
