How are those C-products 7.62x39mm mags coming along?
Because those 7.62x39mm XCR’s have been dancing around in my head.
I’d settle for a 7.62x39 ar15 upper but I don’t trust 7.62x39 AR bolts. Seen some with prematurely broken lugs on the internet.
Is trying to obtain a reliable(read: good mags) and durable(read: good bolt design) 7.62x39mm non-AK/VZ58 rifle impossible?
The XCR seems about the best non-AK semi. Maaaaybe look into a Ruger Ranch Rifle???
I am actually quite impressed with the Vz-58 as I got to shoot it for the first time this weekend.
Light, fast, handy and very accurate. The ergonomics (access to tiny switches) kind of sucks when you’re used to an AR but that’s more about practice.
I can say nothing as to its sustainability and durability but it’s a great shooter. I would bet it’s pretty reliable properly broken in.
Why don’t you want an AK or VZ?

SLR-107 and SLR-107CR are two excellent rifles with factory folders. The Krebs KTR08 is ugly, but very functional. The Arsenal Saiga’s are a good factory fixed stock '103 style rifle. WASR’s are just plain ugly, but they’re cheap and they work.
Reliable? So far so good. C-Pro G4 mags are golden
Supportable? Yep. Spares. SBR barrels. You name it

I have to agree.
There is nothing wrong with the Kalashnikov family of rifles.
There are some poorly built units, but that can be said of AR-15s as well.
If the issue you have with AKs is the safety, the VZ negates that by have a safety not dissimilar from an AR. If you specifically have to/want to have a last round BHO, then the VZ also has that.
Personally, the BHO isn’t as big of an issue to me and what matters to me is software, not hardware. I run both an Arsenal and an AR in 5.56 (they are set up for different applications of the round). I am perfectly comfortable with either.

I completely forgot about the PTR.
In my observation, the weak point of many 7.62x39 rifles outside of the Kalashnikov platform is magazines. The PTR takes standard AK magazines, removing that issue altogether.
It’s expensive, yes, but if you’re willing to drop that coin, it could work.
The ptr rifles are definitely not what I’m looking for. Don’t like the charging handles, mag release is too far forward, etc.
I have a wasr-10. It was a reason I bought an ar15.
Nope. I own one, but the AK/AR envelop does get boring. Not everyone wants a Camry.
Boring? I have never heard that statement before when the subject is either a VZ or AK. I guess if its not Robinson its boring…:rolleyes:
How can platforms that offer such variety be boring?
Been shooting AK’s and AR’s for 8 years. They get boring. Now matter how you dress them up, you’re shooting the same gun. New platforms keep the hobby exciting. It is what it is.
I don’t know about “boring” but some platforms are just not refined.
I can trick out my wasr10 but what’s the point? It will never be what I want to be.
I thought about buying a Lightning Bolt left sided charging handle but thought, “what if I want to put on a side mounted optic?”, then spending $250 on a left side CH would have be pointless. Same applies to the vz58.
I like the 7.62 soviet as a better all purpose, intermediate rifle round than the 5.56, but the proven systems that fire the 7.62x39mm are, in my opinion, inferior to the 5.56 systems. (primarily talking about the ar15’s)
They say the gen4 c-products 7.62x39mm mags are good to go, but I’m hesitant. At this point, I think it would be better for me to focus on 5.56mm ar15’s. When the mags become generally trusted, I will buy some, and a 7.62x39mm upper.
Either that or save money, sell my wasr and mid length ar15, and get a 7.62x39mm XCR.
I’ve been eyeing the PWS Diablo 7.62x39 too. Still waiting for more field reports though. Looks way slick
Fair enough… With all of the different varieties in caliber, stock configurations and SBR potential, I just never viewed them as boring thats all.

The VZ is definetly not an AK. And everyone I’ve talked to who has shot one loved them.
