This year I’ve really gotten into getting in shape and trying to eat better.
I work out from 5-8pm at least four days (somtimes I go 6)a week and I do 30 minutes with a trainner.
I’ve noticed my workouts seem to be better if I have a snack before going to the gym and lately I’ve been eating the Cliff Builders protien bars which are pretty tasty and don’t have a bunch of ingredents that sound like they were reated in a lab. Sometimes I eat mixed nuts instead, just depends on what I have on hand.
Anyway, I’m looking for other stuff to try so I wanted to see what everybody here likes. I can tell you that I don’t like those Met-Rx bars. They don’t taste very good and they don’t look like food either.
Also what should I look for on the nutrion label? What’s good and what"s bad as far as that goes?
I find I feel the best to work out if I have oats, in some form or another, one to two hours before working out. I usually mix oats and granola along with some crushed walnuts and cinnamon (all good things). I’ve even gona as far as to blend oats up with my protien shakes to add some good carbs if needed. It’s a complex carb so you need to give your body some time to process it but when it does it’s sustained quality energy.
For me, if I eat too much too close to a workout, I seem not not be as strong for some reason.
I’ve been eating a small meal about 3 hrs before, such as 1/2 sandwich or equivalent, and a whey/milk shake 30-45 minutes before (8oz milk, 24 g whey) and that has been working well.
Before a work out i like a light meal such as 3oz turkey/ham and an apple/grapefruit and a handful of almonds. Its light, and provides protein as well as good carbs and a little fat for satiety.
If I were to eat a protein bar, I like the builders bar. I have optimum nutrition gold standard whey, but if there is an H.E.B. in your area look for a product called mootopia. It has half the sugar, has 2% or fat free, and double protein. I like it for my post work out drink.
Normally before I workout I can’t eat. As long as I’m not running on fumes I’m good. Now afterwards I have a high protein meal and some carbs to replace the burned energy. Nothing too crazy, just some good food like tuna or chicken.
You work out for 3 hours!? That’s insane. I pride myself on the intense routines I put myself through and they only last an hour and 1/2. Maybe I’m a slacker…
With 3 hour long workouts, I’m sure you need some sort of snack with plenty of protein and complex carbs in them before hand. I usually just try and get 5 meals in a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two nutrient dense snacks between), so my body usually has enough fuel to make it through.
I always make sure I get in a good meal or a protein shake right after my workouts.
if you’re working out for three hours, you are either…well nvm you are just special.
There is absolutely NO need to work out for 3 hours, unless you are running marathons or some ridiculous endurance competition. Working out for that long just hurts you more in the long run. The ratio of workout time to recovery time is a very big deal and if you don’t address that in your workouts and weekly planner you are basically peddling a stationary bike. You will make improvements but you will just over work yourself and end up with injuries in the long run.
There is muscle failure and hurting said muscle, it will still function but I cannot imagine finding enough exercises to workout for that long and not reach muscle failure in the major muscle groups.
I guess I should have asked this first, what in the world to you workout for 3 hours, or what workouts do you do that last for 3 hours.
I work out in early morning (0530), on my way to work, so a large meal is out for me. I’m also adverse to eating too early - no appetite. I usually have half a Larabar and water for pre-workout with a protien shake after.
Larabars are a decent choice - the sugars are natural, and the ingredient list is normally 3, 4, or 5 simple components.
I usually go with a cliff bar (white chocolate macadamia nut is heavenly), an apple and some water before my workout whether morning or afternoon/evening
