Been sorting through all the Magpul grips trying to decide on what to get for a SBR AR15 and a SCAR17. Seems that it’s not as simple as a grip angle choice but a beavertail choice as well.
I understand it on a handgun as it can help bring your hand closer to the bore axis to control recoil.
But AR15 and SCAR rifles already a beavertail as part of their lower. Is the extra beavertail just to try to bring your hand more in line with the trigger by pushing it out a little lower and farther back? Or is it to add a textured gripping surface?
Yep, keeps the hand lower and adds trigger reach. I prefer them with a more vertical grip, like a magpul k2. I plan on picking one up soon. I find not having it can’t my hand too much or I have my hand just “floating” in the middle of the grip.
The current receiver and A2 grip leads to chicken winging, raising the elbow out parallel to the ground. I shot that way for years. It was uncomfortable to my wrist. The new BCM Gunfighter Grip Mod 2 or Mod 3 are great. I have the Mod 3 and it is so much easier to handle the carbine.
It does lower your hand making your trigger finger more in a straight line pull back than back and up with an A2 grip.
I went back and forth between the magpul k2 and BCM mod 3 and finally settled on the mod3 for me I found my hand place would be inconsistent after manipulating the safety due to how pronounced the hump is on the k2. The BCM is more streamline and IMO more comfortable.
Not the only way, as several companies offer triggers that are farther forward than a GI trigger (Geissele SuperDynamic series, Armalite two-stage triggers), but it’s much cheaper and easier to do it with a beavertail grip.
Grip choice is personal preference, affected by your shooting style and hand size. What works great for someone else isn’t necessarily right for you. The current trend/fad of nearly vertical shooting grips is good for some people using certain techniques (square stance, nose to charging handle, short stock length), but not for everyone. Try some different grips out and decide what works for you.
The new MOE K2 is just like the Umbrella Corp that didn’t work for me. The beavertail part is too pronounced and interferes with my reach for the safety.
The BCM mod 3 is just right, but I get rid of the gapper part and use a Magpul trigger guard.
You know, I always thought of grips as a creature comfort but after reading this stuff, I realize it can affect accuracy and fundamentals. I guess I should have already known this
The BCM Mod3, like the Raptor CH and BAD Safety Levers are an automatic add for each of my builds. Probably could say the same for the Norgon Ambi Mag Release too, I suppose, although I still need to order a few of those :). The Mod3 more upright grip angle is just so much more comfortable to me. I went through a few grips before finding this setup - the Hogue, MOE, MIAD, although not the K2 - I think the K2 came out (or I only became aware of it) right around the time I had made the change to the Mod3.
Direction of pull on trigger.
Placement of finger on trigger.
Placement of thumb on selector.
Reduce interference of ambi levers on trigger finger joint.
Reduce friction of knuckle on trigger guard ears.
Align wrist with forearm, change interaction angle.

I’d like to see a good write up. Most LGS don’t have several to choose from. One close has hogue. Another carries magpul stuff. Of course nothing works like trying out, and lots of use. I guess it can vary on stock selection and length of pull too. Good thread for fools like me who haven’t had the slightest.
I use BCM Mod 0 and Magpul MOE-K grip. I have medium size hands - anything with beaver tail slows me down on manipulating the safety and increases reach for mag release.
After reading g replies, I’ll probably go with the bcm. I put a mod 1 on a friends rifle and like it, so I’m sure I’d love the mod3.
As said, the way your body is built makes a huge difference. I have big hands and long arms. Even with an m4 stock fully extended, I feel it could be a bit longer, so take it for what it’s worth.
I switched to the K2 when it came out, but now I think I’m going to have to look at the Mod3. I like the K2 more than any other grip I’ve tried, but the acute hump leaves my hand in no-man’s land sometimes and it just gets uncomfortable. Love the angle though. Is the Mod3 a similar vert angle?
The BCM Mod3 is very similar in angle to the MOE K2. The K2 has slightly more trigger reach. They are roughly the same size in circumference. I’ve experienced the awkward bump on the K2, but the Mod3 doesn’t have enough trigger reach for me, so I’ve mostly gone back to the original MOE.
And personal preference. I have 2XL hands and a 36" sleeve length, and yet I run my stock around A1 length, or shorter with heavy clothing or shoulder straps. I originally liked the Mod1 and Mod3 well (I tried each one as they came out), but later decided they were too small for me - mostly too little reach to the trigger. I also don’t regularly wear body armor and I tend to use a somewhat more classical stance when standing vs. squared up, and I do a fair bit of shooting from unsupported prone and find the nearly-vertical grips to be not as good for that position when compared to the conventional angle (A2 grip, original MOE). YMMV and that’s why there are so many options, with, in my opinion, no option that’s right for everyone.
Definitely helps with the trigger reach. It sounds silly to some, but I’ve always found the AR to be almost un-shootable with a stock grip. Hurt my wrist, and just was generally awful. That’s the first thing I do on any AR I pick up.
