What to get someone deploying to Afghanistan?

I’d get him an IPOD or something like that full of music. Passes the time. We sent a bunch of XBOXs and games to a unit, but not sure whether that is appropriate for his age/situation.

We also sent some factory mags to some guys early on because the marines had crappy after market mags that sucked.

You must not be aware some units supply situation. You might not a light, or 4 gerbers.

sent from mah gun, using my sights

Point made and taken.

I came and still am with a unit that is the state’s and the Army’s red headed step child. We still run m16a2’s and alice packs.

When I volunteered to deploy we got issued all the new ACU stuff 1 month and the next we had to turn it all in to get multicam gear. I’m just glad that when we got home and returned to our home units they still issued us back the new ACU gear.

If you’re a new guy in a military environment make the supply guy your best friend. Do favors, help him out and he’ll remember that.

Just for future reference guys, alot of the items suggested are common issue items, even for non-combat MOS’s. Holsters, Surefires, Multi-tools especially…As for weapons modifications, nothing can be changed except optics. (And that varies by unit) Any change has to be completed by the unit armorer.

One of the biggest things we always enjoy getting is quality books and magazines. Combating boredom is huge and a good book will get passed around for years!

When he saw the knife this is exactly what he commented. That a larger knife would not fit on the vest very well and it was a lot easier to use than a folder (plus, I would assume anything not secured to your person in such an environment is likely to get lost eventually and probably just before you need it).

My top 5 are:

Spyderco Sharpmaker
a hard drive full of movies, music etc
gun/men’s/car magazines
condiments/spices/hot sauce
food like candy, jerky, protein powder etc
