Before I knew more about firearms I purchased a Stag model 1, with a few upgrades such as a Troy 12inch MRF-CX free float and RDS plus some magpul goodies to finish out the lower. This rifle has served me well with the only feeding problems being related to a shotty magazine and a defected trigger which Stag sent me a replacement for.
I have now decided that I want to purchase a top tier manufactured upper, in the BCM or DD category probably along the lines of a 14.5 middy for now and some SBRs down the line for work later on.
My problem now is I know I will not get the same price I paid for this rile, I plan on keeping the lower regardless but am stuck on what to do with the upper. Is it worth selling for less or is there something i can do to keep this upper and make it worth while? I have thought maybe I will keep it as a competition upper, but since was purchased in MA the comp is pinned on thus making the FSB unremovable with out cutting. (will now be living and working in VA)
Will a magnified optic be crap with a FSB or is it still able to use with ease even with the FSB in view?
Or any other custom ideas of what to do in a cost effective manner which would make keeping this upper worthwhile since I am pretty much planning on buying a replacement (14.5n middy) that would make having a 16in carbine redundant
Just sell the upper. I had a Bushmaster XM-15 before I “knew better” and when it came time for me to upgrade, I bought a BCM and a KAC rail and to recoup my losses I traded my Bushmaster upper for a rangefinder plus $600 cash (during the Obama craze in case anyone is wondering why I got so much for it).
Keeping your lower is a good idea, I still have my Bushmaster lower, in fact it is the ONLY thing left of my old Bushmaster rifle. Everything else has been changed out, every little pin and spring.
You can always keep your Stag upper and build a cheap “beater/truck” gun out of it.
This is what I would do. I would buy a lower at the next fun show and use your current upper to build a beater or truck gun. You can’t have too many ARs.
If you’re like most of us, you probably belong to a couple of boards. I sometimes come across stuff I KNOW wouldn’t sell HERE, but sells fine on those OTHER boards. List it THERE - you’ll get more money, and it’ll sell a lot faster.
i would just keep it if theres nothin wrong with it…i have a cheap carbine with a FSB and i put a cheap Ncstar 3x-9x on it and like previously stated it works fine. Im not saying that you cant see the slightest bit of blurr where the post is but you can easily acquire your target and shoot well. Its such a slight blur that its not even an annoyance to me at all.
Take a hit and sell it if you feel like you have no need or use for it anymore. Better than sitting around collecting dust. It is what it is…The AR market is plentiful now. Don’t expect to get what you paid…nowhere close.
