What do you consider the best range to zero a pistol caliber subgun or carbine?
I’ve heard some people say 25 yards and some say 50 yards. 25 yards makes sense because the short range of a pistol cartridge and is a common range to zero handguns. However I feel the handguns are zeroed at closer range more because of sight difficulty rather than it being the correct or best trajectory.
I will be zeroing my CZ Scorpion pistol tomorrow. Probably at 50 yards unless anyone has a good or reason to use a 25 yard zero.
50 sounds good. That gives you something like +2 inches at 25 yards. So just use a 6 o’clock hold up close and you’ll be good. When I was MP5 trained in the early 90’s the HK qual course was out to 100 yards so a 50 yard zero is not that odd. David
I would either try different zeros out, or use a ballistic solver to find the range that gives you the flattest trajectory out to the range you deem as max useable.
There was a great thread that talked about zero ranges for red dot equipped pistolaz. That might be a good place to search if you have a short barrel.
What is the purpose of the afore mentioned sub gun?
The PCC I use for competition, I zero at 50 yds because the bays are 50yds deep and shooting plate racks can be a real btch.
Otherwise I use 25 yds for HD, CQB.
Great topic, as I am just about to go zero my CZ Scorpion. My stamp just came in : ) As such, off I go to the range. It seems that a 25 yard zero makes the most sense after watching the above video. That would be ideal for Home defense.
I like 50, as it gives the least amount of change in trajectory within the useful envelope of the platform with quick 9mm out of longer barrels.
Here’s an easy calculator: https://www.federalpremium.com/ballistics_calculator/
Just don’t forget to put in the correct sight height (usually 2.7-3.5 inches for subguns).
I enjoyed that video. I am going to run the same test with Mark this weekend with 50 yard zero. 25-50-100-maybe 200 but not 300. Should be cool test. I’ll run some plus P’s to keep it real.
Just got back from the range. Started at 25 yards with an eight inch shoot-n-see target. First shot was a direct hit on the 1/2 inch wide red center dot of the target. So I guess CZ thinks the 25 yard zero is where it’s at. It was so well zeroed out of the box I decided not to mess with the sights. Great gun and the KAK Shockwave Blade is a great product. Now I just need some trigger springs to help this spongy mess out.
I️ haven’t changed my sights at all either. I️ have shot it out to 150 yards. At 100 yards with my suppressor I️ can hit a 6” plate every shot. I️ just aim at the top of the plate.
I’ve been using 50 with a Tavor in 9mm (so a bit more barrel length than most SMG’s). No issues with holds; everything within about 45 or so gets put in the bottom half of the EOTech’s ring and past 50 there’s minimal rise.
My Zenith dead nuts on too. I took it to an indoor range to sight it in and was done after first shot. Must be something about design that enables such consistency.
When I worked for HK ITD we zeroed the MP5s at 25 yards. Puts you about 2" high at 50, on at 75 and 2" low at 100. Pretty much covers the entire useable distance for a sub gun. I have done the same with my Evo and found the numbers to work out very similarly.
