Planning on removing my colt pistol grip with finger groves and purchase one without. Checked out BCM and they have many options and of course I have no idea on the advantage of one over the other.
Please educate me.

This is very individual preference dependant. I like the bcm mod3. It’s a bigger grip with more trigger reach and is more vertical than a stock grip.
Anything from bcm or magpul is going to be quality, but I had a CCA grip for a while and it held up fine for a few years.
BCM Mod 3 is my favorite.
That said, Ruger has one on their AR-556 that looks interesting. Not sure if they sell it as a component though. This one (click on “pistol grip” and it shows a pic):
I also prefer the mod 3. Not only is it cheaper, but feels better in my hand.

The A2 grip is a known compromise with a high degree of span of range for it’s uses. A preferred grip could be had by changing it to something else for an individual and their circumstances, but there is no “best”, just a standard to go from. A possible solution is a grip with multiple options that could be swapped for better use, maybe something MIADish, but not necessarily that product. It could be useful to use to see what way the OP wants to go as an intermediate step.
This is the grip I put on all of my rifles. It is the best grip, by a long shot, I’ve ever used. It has the ledge on the inside of the grip like the A2 but the grip is a different angle which makes it better for shooting in my experience.
The issue with that is to see if that has the same span of operation as the A2. If it meets the A2 requirements with better function, then great, bring it up as a PIP possible improvement. If it doesn’t satisfy the requirements, then it won’t make the cut as a contender to the A2 grip.
I am by no means saying that improvements can not be made, just that some changes may have a negative attribute if issued overall over the base product. I personally do not like the A2 grip, but that’s for my fit and not the entire user group overall.
I think there’s a disconnect here. The OP is asking about what people suggest/prefer to use for a grip for the themselves and/or the OP, NOT for every single person and/or organization worldwide that uses a rifle capable of mounting an ar grip.
As mentioned above, the pistol grip is very much a personal choice. I have gone through several looking for just the right one that fit me and ended preferring the BCM mod 1. The mod 3 will save you $6 as it lacks the changeable front grip top of the mod 1.
Is there a disconnect here really? How can someone compare or contrast the realities that makes someone less able with an able to do in an event in the course of action? If a choice in the product is made that reduces the span of function that is possible, how can that make them make more reliable in that course of a span?
For example, a reduction of span that removes 25% of what is effective could be a positive attribute to a negative in certain ways? The 75% could be more comfortable, the others may not. You just removed 25% of your force. Great plan.
How can anyone prove beyond a doubt that a certain grip change could really change from something almost anyone can use to a change that fewer can use will help you in a firefight?
Sure, certain grips feel better.
Nobody would want more return fire in a real fight. Man up, I hated incoming fire coming my way. You may be different.

Technically subjective empirically tested and verified opinions of grip angles and/or fingergrooves (not to be confused with material, which actually can be objectively tested) on someone else’s grip instead of simply suggesting a grip or grips that work for you is apparently your thing baby.

Span of operation? What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about rifle grips aren’t we? It ain’t that complicated and different folks like different stuff.
Fortunately the op is dealing with himself, not a national army. There is no “span” like you keep mentioning.
This is along the lines of what underwear do you prefer? Tighty-whities, bikini, boxers or none? Silk or cotton? We can’t know what grip you will like. I have mostly BCM grips, with a few Magpul’s, and a B5. You probably need to buy what YOU THINK is good and then test it.
BCM Mod 2 might be the best for you since it’s modular.
For me I use the Mod 0 and Magpul K-grip as I have medium size hands and want to manipulate the safety without rotating my wrist too much.

Another BCM Mod 3 vote…it’s inexpensive, is more vertical in its position, has a notch that fills in the trigger guard gap, and a storage compartment.
