What is your SD/HD 5.56 load?

Not sure if has been covered, so remove if it has. What ammo do you currently keep close at hand in your AR for SD/HD?

Recommendations OK, but I’d be interested to hear what’s actually in those mags that are designated as your SD/HD loads, and why if you feel so inclined.

Currently, just basic M855 for me.

Hornady TAP FPD 75gr. great stuff, also have some 55gr. TAP polymer tips but I don’t like the lighter stuff in .223 so much compared to 55’s in 5.56

Handloaded Barnes 55 grain TSX used with 16" and 20" barrels.

I can’t mail order ammo here in the People’s Republic of MA, but a few local stores probably carry something better then the M855.

Hornady 5.56 75gr. TAP w/ T2 bullet.

Work ammo is the 64gr Gold Dot bonded round.

62gr. DPX

Of course I’m a little biased;)

Black Hills 50gr TSX 5.56

I originally said the Speer .223 64gr GD. I saw that you asked about 5.56 and not the .223. To be honest I have both and would use either. The Speer cost a LOT less and I have more of it. If it has to be 5.56 I’m going with the BH 50gr TSX

Federal LE 223T3 62 grain bonded but I get them supplied and am required to use them.

If I was buying and wasn’t worried about barriers I would opt for any of the rounds mentioned in the terminal ballistics forum for 5.56/.223.

Edit: Just saw your name. I assume you are “that” Will Brink? I’ve read a bunch of your articles. Great stuff that has helped me a lot. I now compete in triathlons and am training for a half ironman and have used a fair amount of the stuff. Everyone should read them. So…thanks.

Joe

Right now loaded the last of the 5.56 speer gold dot. Started to make the move to Blackhills 50 gr. TSX.

55gr handload vmax currently.

Something you could probably find local is Federal Fusion 62gr .223 hunting round. This is a bonded soft point and basically is the same as XM223SP1 which is what I keep loaded.

M4: 55gr Federal Power Shok. Hollow point
11.5": 55gr Hornady TAP. Polymer Tipped

62 gr Federal Fusion .223, bought on impulse when I saw it on the shelf. Basically the same as 64 gr. Gold Dot or XM223SP1. Surprisingly little flash at dusk out of an 11.5" SBR.

75 gr TAP.
I am probably going to change to a barrier blind round from the good Dr’s list.
Don’t get too wrapped up in it. Good defensive ammo is expensive. I zero mine at 100 meters and do all less than 100 meter training with cheap training ammo. I keep 90 to 150 rounds on hand, and cycle it annually (after getting a fresh delivery).

Here are Docs recommendations:

I read the above. As usual, docs info is GTG and I’ll look into getting one of the barrier blind rnds. :neo:

Lets see in the Colt right now 50 gr Serria SP’s, in the Carbine 55gr 5.56mm XM193! I don’t have a set load it could be anything from the 50 gr SP to 75 gr A-max cause if I need a rifle any one of the loads I have will do the BG a bad deal! Never seen to many folks walk away from a rifle hit !

Do the 75gr TAP cycle the same in your AR?

I was gonna try those but I dont know if they would work in either setup???

M4 or 11.5" both with H buffer.

Would those work you reckon?

5.56 TAP T2 for inside the house

Most likely will load my own TSX 55gr for a “general duty” load as recommended by Doc.

I choose Barnes RRLP by SSA. 13" of a deep mess in gel, but dont make decision off of what I say. I have no experience.

My readings lead me to not be confortable with a FMJ or any penetrator in a home.

I use federal LE223T1 55gr soft point in my duty rifle. We are limited to 223 55gr SP, otherwise I would probably go with something cheaper like GD.
