I have a friend who asked me a question that I don’t have the answer to. I figured you guys would be able to steer him in the right direction. Below is the email he sent me. The rifle is his own build up. Thanks for all the help guys!
"I noticed upon cleaning my AR that there is a wear mark on the disconnector from the tang or tail of the hammer.
The tail of the hammer seems to be hitting the disconnector. If you pull the trigger and hold it back (disconnector rocks forward and lifts the rear half), then push the hammer back with your thumb, the tail of the hammer hits the disconnector right where the wear mark is. The disconnector rocks back with the hammer and as you release the hammer the disconnector rocks forward and engages the hammer holding it. During the bolt cycling, the hammer must be hitting the disconnector on its way to cocking/disconnector lock-up. I only have 150 Federal 55grn factory through it so far.
I tried a test. I colored the wear mark with a Sharpie and put the gun back together. I then held the trigger back and cycled the bolt with the charging handle 10 times. I then examined the wear mark area. There was just a slight hair line indication of the hammer hitting. So… the inertia of the hammer being cocked by the bolt during firing must be contributing to the hitting and wearing of the disconnector.
I took some pics. Is this normal wear? Do you see this on any of your ARs? I guess I could grind the tail back a little. What do you think?"
