lookin for a shotgun that is under $400, 12 gauge, pump action and is not a remmington 870 cause my brother has one. i figured id come here first cause some1 did recommend the stevens field/security combo or the mossberg field/security. it would b nice to have somethin for home defense too but lookin more for a trap gun
Hope this dosent sound to harsh but trap is gay! With that said most guys shoot single shots, over and unders or semi auto. If you dont want the 870 spend some coin and get a win mod 12 and look cool. Seriously though trap is gay!

You don’t want one because your brother has one? I like 870’s but buy a Mossberg if it works better for you. You could buy one with a pair of bbls often geared towards a duck hunting and deer hunting combination with a 26"/28" bbl and a 18"/20" bbl with rifled sights or a simple bead.

Im not sure i would stray from the 870 just because somebody else had one. It wouldnt matter to me if it were my money i would buy and 870. The mossberg sounds like a bottle full of rocks and feels like a cheap toy… For your budget its almost one or the other i paid just over that for mine with a 21 rifled barrel and a 26 in vent rib
Guns-Up! I love the name. Your set up is just what I was thinking.
OP having what your brother does could come in handy when you least expect it.
I shot ATA trap for years, and have many belt buckles from my winnings.
Remington actually makes an 870 trap. For under 400 its your best best or they have also made an 1100 and 11-87 trap.
If you buy a normal shotgun it will not have a high enough comb or rib to be effective at trap. This is because the bird is RISING at ALL times…if you shoot at the right time. Games like skeet and other clay pigeon cames the bird can be falling, flat, or rising…thus you need a less aggressive setup. Trap is setup so when you are shooting the bird is always rising. An average setup would be 70/30 which means if you shot at a paper target 70% of the pellets would be above the line of sight and 30% would be below it. The guys who shoot quicker out of the house will be 80/20 or 90/10 for the really quick guys. All the top guys have custom fit guns, and one guy Sean Hawley, who I shot with, had a custom Perazzi he was out on the range self fitting with a sanding pad on the expensive stock to custom fit it. Trap is not setup to be shot with hunting guns and defensive guns. You can go here: http://www.shootata.com/content/Shooter_Information_Center.aspx and type in a members name. Look up Sean Hawley.
Check our perazzi, kolar, krieger, lujtic, and see the crazy ribs on the trap guns as compared to skeet and other shooting sports guns.
FWIW I won several western championships in my class, youth classes, and by the time I stopped shooting I was shooting some expensive european guns. I started out with an 870 express which I still have. If you ever want to do good, and be competitive you have to have natural talent and good gear. Its very mental but shooting crappy gear is a drag on mental success, and can drag you further down mentally trying to fight your gear. Things like lock time, adjustability to fit you, ect. If the top guys are out their sanding their own stocks theres no way you are going to compete buying an OTS gun. But something like an 870 trap will get you in the game. Most everyone starts with something like that. As mentioned I started at a local non ATA club with an 870, got a BT99, Beretta 682X trap, and moved on from there.
Some of my fondest memories of my childhood was standing around a burn barrel for scrap wood trying to shoot trap while it was below freezing at night. You don’t have to shoot ATA to have fun but its just an organized version of trap all over the country. I enjoyed the games at my local club for money and the competitiveness of ATA. At my local club we’d do games like miss 2 misses and you’re out while cranking the house up to full blast. For the long shots you’d need some serious shells. But trap is not skeet or 5 stand. ATA trap is more of a personal mental test than anything but it still requires a certain degree of natural ability.
I never did enjoy trap as much as skeet & sporting clays…wobble trap was fun but the hard core trap shooters were simply crotchety and not very fun to hang around. Maybe things have changed but they used to whine and bitch if you didn’t stay in tune. My Dad finally made me stop shooting it cuz he knew I went over to irk the older geezers. I still have a 3200 remington special trap. It has not even had the upgrades they recommended.
Sporting clays is really the game to consider…but a semi or O/U is what you want for that game.
Well thats why I said its a mental game, and you get into a rhythm. No one wants 4 guys on a squad on the same pace, and then 1 oddball fumbling with his gun while hes supposed to be shooting. It can throw your own game off.
Its not not like sporting clays or 5 stand where each person takes their turn, and takes their own time to get ready. A good squad does make a difference, and the better the shooters around you the better you will do. If you watch the ATA fields during big events people are VERY particular who they are squad’ed with.
Hello, yes I’m such a dorky noob here just looking to boost my post count…however, I’d go w/ a used Benelli Supernova. Or a new, black one (not camo) would probably also be in your price range.
Reliable, durable, recoil reduction built in, will take 3.5" shells, and it’s NOT an 870 like your dumb a brother has. lolaz!
this is a good point. but if u want new you cant beat a 870. a moss is 2nd in my book. both good guns justa few things a little diff about them. such as the safty and loading. i own a 870 and have shot a 500 plenty of times like both but feel that the 870 has a little more class
I have always shot quite well with a Mossberg 500 and it can be configured in quite a few ways.
a remington 870 or a mossburg 500. it depends where you like the saftey.
Mossy > 870 in safety location and probably price.
Both are good popular guns that can be easily setup is multiple configs.
Supernova > all the above (imo, of course)
If your serious about clays, look at an O/U though.
And for pulling double duty at home, nearly any shotty, should do the dang trick. just keep in mind shorter = better maneuverability.
