What Hat Are You Wearing?

I buy these three at a time for working outside, etc. Not a big Condor fan but I tried one of these on when I was in AT once and they fit just right. No button in the crown and no gaudy labels anywhere. You can’t beat them for the price:

Here’s what I wear and I like it so much, purchased several. Biggest problem for me with hats is heat, my head gets hot no matter the temp, and any hats make me sweat in all but the lowest temps, but I need to wear a hat due to shaved head and an interest in reducing sun exposure, etc. It literally took me decades to find the “perfect” hat for me:

Get a straw cowboy hat, I wear one to cut the grass or when I’m outside. They breathe really nice. Normally I wear a ball cap when going out and about.

I have so many hats it’s not funny, including a large brimmed straw hat which I do wear around the yard and such, but it does not roll up nice and small to be put in a bag, or pocket, etc. It also looks kinda goofy on me I think. Believe when I say, decades trying to find just the right hat that fits virtually all needs I have for a hat.

Get one that has the wire in the brim. You can roll it or shape it how you want.

I feel your pain.

I’m VERY hot natured and only wear hats when I’m in the sun for protection or cold weather. I have a thick head of hair that’s like wearing a helmet that holds heat in add a hat and I’m in misery. One thing I do is pour cold water over my head and put my hat back on when working outdoors.

But yeah, no hat breaths enough for me.

I wear a Noveske Cap some, I have a "slouch’ hat I guess by Pendleton and a dark brown Stetson I bought when I returned from Vietnam in '67, they were real then. I need to get it cleaned and blocked.

I wear “free” ball caps… but my Cat, Peterbilt and Kenworth hats cost me plenty.

I have an Akubra that I wear when I’m just outdoors (and the temperature is in the 40s or higher).

A South African bush hat (boonie hat) for when the space and/or weight of the Akubra can be an issue (namely, it’s a lot easier to roll the bush hat up and toss it into a duffle than to do likewise with the Akubra).

A Sitka-branded ballcap for running around town.

A tacticool Oakley ballcap for summer shooting and mowing the lawn.

A reproduction early WWII US HBT cap for when I’m shooting old guns in summer.

A wool flatcap for running around town when it’s cool but not cold.

A Stormy Kromer for when I’m outside and it’s cool but not cold.

A jeep cap for when it’s really cold. (And if it’s windy or really, really cold, I put up a hood.)

Been looking for that “Pale Rider” Hat, but @ +500U$D for a made in the U.S.A. quality one! Hmmm. . .

By the by, interesting history on this style of hat that was said to be worn by Danite Mormon Hit Men.

Two questions:

1- Did you order the puggaree in the same size as your hat or did you order a size (or two) up?
And
2- Did you put that puggaree on upside down?

Depends on the day of the week.

I did put the puggarree on upside down for shits and giggles to see if anyone noticed. Of course the pleats go at the top a la the Australian military. Each of the seven pleats represents the seven Australian states. Good catch. I wore it that way for a couple of days because it was tighter upside down and didn’t shift around as much. Later, when I took the puggarree off and washed it in hot water then dried it in the clothes dryer it shrank just enough to fit. I now wear it right side up like you’re supposed to.

Always order the size puggarree that corresponds to the size of hat. If you order one that’s a little big, it may shift too much. When you have the correct size, be prepared for it to take a little effort to get it on the hat the first time. As I said, mine loosened up over time and I had to shrink it in hot water and the clothes dryer to get it back to the right size. When you order from Lawrence Ordnance, you might want to get two just in case one is too small. The “correct” size does have some variation in both the hat and the pug, so having a spare is not a bad idea in case you just can’t get one on.

BTW, David Morgan charges $20 for different bashes. I like the Coober Pedy bash for the classic safari hat look. The pinched telescope bash also looks good if you’re after the “Out of Africa” or “Ghost in the Darkness” safari hat bash. The one in the photo is the Coober Pedy bash, but after months of abuse. You have to tell David Morgan you want a specific bash in the comments, because they only list certain ones “officially.”

I typically wear a 13 year old John Deere ball cap that I thought I lost in the Charleston,SC harbor but found floating over a sand bar 4 hours later. This thing is salty and faded!

In the windter I wear a Magpul or Arc’teryx beanie.

In the summer at the beach I wear a Tilley.

I’d go with the Tom Horn style myself.

Tilley Airflo when hiking: https://www.tilley.com/us_en/ltm6-airflo-hat.html

Boonie hat for working in the yard.

I got my puggaree one size larger than my Akubra and it was extremely tight going on. And my Akubra was already a little small and it got smaller with the puggaree on it.

I doused it in warm water - along with the hat around the band - and pulled it tight on my head over a shemagh… and now everything seems to fit fine. But the puggaree is still quite tight on the hat. Not that I mind it.

I like the one on the left better.

I wish they (and other makers) sold one that just had LaRue and left off all the ‘Tactical’ indicators.

Same.

I would wear a LaRue Dillo hat daily if I could.
