What happened to the VLTOR uppers?

What happened to the VLTOR uppers with the markings?
Did they stop producing them with the logo on the forward assist?

Used to look like this;

They haven’t sold the older style upper with the marked forward assist for quite a while. Every once in a while they will pop up on the EE.

Mine has a logo like that on the brass deflector. Bought around mid 2013.

I’ll have to keep an eye out! Looks much better with the engraved logo on the forward assist imo!

Beautiful setup. That upper looks so clean. I sure hope they’ve put out more since then.

Thanks. I certainly thought so. Upper never has fit right though. So incredibly tight that I have to use a punch to pop the rear pin to take it apart. Sent the original back to the manufacturer for the same reason and had it replaced as “out of spec”. Have to squeeze down on the upper to get the pins in. Also don’t understand the “M” in “MUR” as it’s not actually “modular”. I can’t change anything out or switch to a non-forward assist setup. Honestly, if I were doing it over, I’d probably skip the MUR. I got it because Noveske was using them with that gen lower at the time.

Well since you wouldn’t pick the same upper again, what would you recommend instead?

I also have looked at the MUR uppers for a long time. Now a lot of companies are doing billet uppers though. I’m sure you just pick in that looks pretty to you lol.

I had the exact same issue with one of the early Vltor MUR uppers on my gen 2 Noveske lower. It was such a tight fit that I needed a punch to get the pins out. I eventually removed the upper and replaced it with one of the Noveske marked Vltor MUR uppers which fit great.

Any standard upper with M4 cuts. For that gun, probably a Noveske. Can’t say it’s the fault of the MUR though. Could be a combo of the MUR and the Noveske Gen2 lower. I can’t remember, but I think the MUR fit fine on a PSA standard lower.

The pinned FA on my VLTOR MUR blew off my Noveske. I guess roll pins can fail, despite the rest of the upper being a solid unit. It’s been re-pinned and seems fine now, though that rifle doesn’t get much range time lately.

I do like the Noveske gen3 uppers in combination with the NSR, for a smooth interface between upper and rail.

The advantage to the forged MUR is that it’s stiffer than most other uppers and more precisely made than most other uppers without being much heavier. The downside is cost.

If you want an upper designed to be stiffer and more precise that’s more economical than the MUR, get a new BCM upper. Don’t bother with billet uppers. Billet uppers cost more money, but being made from a billet instead of a drop forging, they are not as stiff. Forgings are stiffer because the grain off the metal follows the shape of the part.

I used a forged VLTOR MUR to build a precision upper and have been very satisfied with the results

Out of curiosity did you contact Vltor? If not, why not?

I contacted Noveske, as it was a Noveske factory rifle. They asked me to return it to them for inspection and repair.
I reckon I could have re-pinned it, but they wanted to take a look. Sheared pin, they said.

Good luck finding a BCM stripped upper.

Goes without saying. Lol.

I thought i saw Vltor MURs back in stock at MidwayUSA recently.

Although it’s not stripped they’re available with DC and FA for $120 from Joe-Bob. At least they are right now…

And if you want stripped ones, BCM does have scratched / demo stripped uppers for $80.

That’s what I mean by stripped and those are “on order”.

Scratch 'n dent stripped BCM?
