What happened to the "how many loaded mags to keep on hand" thread?

Rob is right we can not force people out. However, a good HINT is when we ask you to leave and you do not; we hand you a form that asks for your next of kin so we can notify them AFTER the storm. Most sensible people get it.

I don’t think 1k rounds of ammo would qualifiy for “a lot” to anyone here.

And you’re total mag inventory is 4?

lanceriley - I think you need to go shopping. I don’t travel with less then a basic load and you are way below that. Plus, you have no safety net.

What would one quantify as a “basic load.” Thanks.

Rob_s,
I like the way you think. I call it smart, not paranoid. I could not imagine you have anything to be paranoid about.

In this day and age, people should be buying PALLETS of ammunition instead of hundreds of rounds. Reason? Ammo does not go bad, can be used for bartering and of course defending what is yours.

C4

Couldn’t agree more, Grant – but some of us are constrained to stocking our pallets a few hundred rounds at a time, don’tcha know…

shopping sounds nice… maybe you can help me with that then find a way to ship those goodies over here in the Philippines. heheheeh It’s hard to get those things over here. We usually depend on black market .

somebody suggest what a basic load is

Basic load= basic combat load

I believe it means the amount of ammo your duce gear can hold usually dictated by unit S.O.P. For me 1 mag in carbine 3 in my chest rig or armor carrier or 4 loaded mags or 112 rnds.

There might be a basic load that is common in the Millitary but having no mil experience I dont know.

Also for me I have at least 4 mags loaded ant any time(1 in carbine 3 in 2nd line). I might also have 1-20 other mags loaded depending if I am anticipating a training/practice day or if I did not go through all of my mags running drills on a given range day.

Brilliant logic. Ammo is very valuable and versatile in a troubled situation such as a temporary societal collapse.

Just wish I could afford the pallets.

Considering the the way the crime rate here seems to get worse by the day. Rob is setting the example of what we all need to be doing here. It’s getting really bad. People are getting stalked, followed and robbed just going to Best Buy. The criminals will also wait for you to leave or come home from work and rob you in your driveway. Gas tanks punched and drained, banks robbed, stealing from your car while your getting gas…you have to constantly be on gaurd. This is just normal daily crime. Can you imagine what will happen the next time a major hurricane blows in? I expect our next crisis here, will be a mass migration of desperate illegal aliens, since there seems to be a boat load every other day now. Who ever came up with that wet foot, dry foot policy, must be insane.

TT MAV hanging next to the safe:
8 30-round Colt mags w/ Magpul followers, SAW spring, and ranger plates loaded to 28 rounds with XM193 along with 3 Glock 17 mags loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 gr

Additional mags in the safe:
5 30-round Colt mags w/ Magpul followers loaded to 28 rounds w/ XM193
7 20-round Colt mags loaded to 18 w/ XM193
2 Glock 18 33-round mags and 3 Glock 17 mags loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 gr

I try to keep 1K of 5.56mm on hand at all times, but I have to admit that I have been pretty deficient at doing so of late. I am in gun and mag buying mode right now in anticipation of the worst (Obama) this upcoming election. At my parents’ place down in Florida I have an additional 3k of IMI M855 and M193. Man I long for the days of $280 per 1200 IMI M855; and it wasn’t all that long ago.

that’s a nice load out… but there’s no way I can carry all of that in my body.

A smiple mag pouch or two or a satchel will aid you in carrying what you determine a basic load for you to be. For me it depends. The lightest I will go is 3 and that’s just 1 in the gun and 2 on the belt. I’m hoping to have more than that, and the rig over my front seat carries 4. TThe shoulder bag I can grab carries 3. The rig in the gear bag in the back has 7.

by the time you get your gear on your body… threat may already have over run you. or… threat may have passed.

I have 400 rounds of Hornady 8126N and 300 rounds of cheap Winchester Q3131.
I was considering adding green tip M855 but I’m confused about the Florida laws concerning AP ammo. Is M855, AP ammo? Is it ok for me as a civilian to buy it? Considering in a SHTF scenario around here, I might be up against AK47’s and I figured it would be prudent to have some.

Honestly never given any thought to it. I ordered the IMI M855 from Cole’s, Botach, KY Imports and others who used to carry it. And I remember many ammo vendors at South FL gunshows having M855 for sale. I can’t imagine it would have been so widely available at gunshows had there been a problem with it.

And M855 isn’t really a true AP round. I believe is advertised as a deeper penetrator, but not at true AP.

Thanks, the TT MAV keeps everything on your body. The additional mags are just there for back-up or to throw in a bag if we had to hit the road.

Hope this isn’t off track, but we started to talk about survival as well as loaded Mags, so here goes…

In my grab and go rifle case, I have one in the gun, 3 in my chest rig, and 3 more in a Molle Pouch inside the rifle case. All 75 Gn. Tap. I also keep my drop leg 1911 holster, dump pouch and 4 extra loaded 1911 mags in that same case. I also have spare parts for the AR and 1911 as well as cleaning kit, lube, extra flashlight bulbs, batteries, goggles, ear plugs etc.

That would be all I could carry on foot with my rifle.

I also have a “Bug Out Bag” in the car with 3 loaded AR Mags with 75 Gn. TAP, 4 loaded 1911 Mags, Blow Out first aid kit, water, freeze dried meals, a small pot, mini stove and propane.

Now, if I can carry more, I have an additional 12 30 rounders with 75 gn. TAP, 10 1911 Mags, clothing, boots, 12 gauge loads (SD and Survival), more water, more batteries, cleaning kits, communications, etc. in one of those large plastic tubs with wheels.

Then I have 840 rounds of XM193 in a 5.56mm Ammo Can in clips and bandos, and about 10 mags of practice ammo, and 2,000 rounds of loose practice ammo in a 7.62mm can. All 55gn FMJ loaded on my Dillon.

In the house, I have one 30 rounder in my night stand, one in the safe and one in my coffee table. I also have 1911 mags in these locations as well.

I feel somewhat prepared living in Colorado with our climate, but I know you can never have too much. I think it’s about where it’s at, and how are you going to access and move it.

Never mind about M855.

I’ll load my P-mags with 28 rounds 8126N and plink with the Q3131.
