What the heck kind of helmet is that? What is that chin thinggy? Armor? Dust filter?

looks like

but it isn’t i don’t think

IINM, that’s the Ops Core FAST helmet. The Chin thing appears to be a separate item attached to the helmet rails. Looking at it again, the goggles are attached the same way too… The bigger question for me is, how do you aim with that thing on??

The face protection looks similar to the Revision brand “Mandible” pictured below, except that the one pictured above looks to be made out of woven soft kevlar much like the god forsaken N.A.P.E pad that Crye just had to invent to make me miserable:

OPS-CORE also makes similar products such as the side armor attachment which covers the ears and attaches to the rails on their FAST helmets.

Good for vehicle gunners for sure. I personally wouldn’t wear any of that crap dismounted though.

Yep, a VBL III.

How the hell are you supposed to get anything resembling a cheek weld with that thing on?

I believe it’s an improved version of the Ops-Core Gunsight Mandible debuted at SHOT 2011. According to their own product literature" “it uses a combination of soft armor and support frame technology”.

the mandible is flexible enough to get a decent cheek weld; same thing with the Crye chops. when you press the stock against your cheek, it flexes and just adds about 1/4" between your cheek and the stock. a slight cant (maybe about 10°) of the weapon also helps look through the RDS/optic.

while usable with rifles, face protection like that is intended more for roles like driving/riding in vehicles, or behind weapons that don’t require a cheek weld like miniguns or M2’s etc.

Saw this “teaser” of it and at the 0:19|0:20 mark.
