I have an A5 on my SR-15, and I would really like to ditch the A2 stock on my musket in favor of a collapsible type. There are no more A5 components to be had anywhere that I can find.
How can I recreate this kit with standard parts? Will a heavier buffer and rifle spring work? Which weight?
No, a rifle spring and a carbine length buffer will not work. The A-5 tube is longer than a carbine tube, the A-5 buffer is longer than a carbine buffer. The combination allows the use of the rifle length spring.
Rogtac has the A5 buffer tube in stock. You just need to find a buffer and spring and you are good to go. I back ordered an A5 buffer from DSG Arms and I had it in two weeks.
The A5 uses a specific buffer with a rifle spring. You will not be able to recreate it out of other parts without the A5 buffer. Don’t mix and match parts. Carbine buffers belong only in carbine tubes with carbine springs.
Best bet is to try and get the buffer tube, spring, and buffer from different locations if they are in stock.
I was aware of the proprietary parts. I was looking for a way to put a collapsible stock on my 20", but it doesn’t necessarily have to be an A5-type setup. Is there a way to do it without going the A5 route?
I will concur with the previous posts. I used a BCM with a 20" barrel and carbine tube and H2 buffer. Ran great. It had a collapsible stock, but I wanted to go to an A2 stock, so I picked up the Vltor rifle modstock, which fits right on a carbine tube.
