I won this. Ruger 10/22 Laminate with a Gemtech Outback IID.
Long Mountain Outfitters / Small Arms Review did a 12 Days of Christmas promotion last year and I was the grand prize winner. Most ironic of all is I didn’t have to enter anything, I was chosen from among the subscribers (really glad I kept my subscription).
Initially the first prize was to be a Savage model .22 bolt action but something happened to that so the prize was upgraded. To complicate things I regularly leave my phone turned OFF so I didn’t learn that I won until they contacted me by mail requesting that I call them and make FFL / SOT arrangements for transfer.
I suspect it would have been really easy to just move on to the next guy on the list and declare him the winner, obviously that isn’t how they do things at LMO and I’m really grateful for the effort.
I just happened to have a Nikon 3-9x40 which belonged to my father and has been sitting dormant in my safe because it simply wasn’t suitable for any of my military rifles and all the sporting rifles I own already have optics so it made a perfect fit for the 10/22. Also fitting that my new “regular plinking” rifle will always remind me of my father every time I sight through the scope and that’s a really nice bonus.
Right before Hurricane Andrew my uncle got strong armed into a company raffle for a Mossberg 500 12 Ga. bullpup. He complained that he never won anything in his life but ponied up for a ticket ($5 or $10, I can’t remember).
He was stunned to later discover he won. I always thought that was pretty convenient timing given he would later be pulling serious home security for his Homestead, FL property.
I was always a teensy bit jealous even though I’m not a huge Mossberg fan. I no longer am but I seriously hope this doesn’t mean I have to do a hurricane this season.
Winchester subsonic is “pellet gun” quiet. I did some sound checks into the ground behind my shed.
I could probably build a satisfactory backstop for static shooting.
The other post was to build a backstop sufficient to run some backyard close range drills. I’ve come to the conclusion that won’t be practical or possible.
Ok, I did some side by sides with my Gemtech Oasis rifle (integrally suppressed) and was sort of surprised. Using the same ammo the difference in suppression (going by my ear not a controlled setting with proper equipment) and accuracy (shooting at a very short distance so this may be completely meangingless) was negligible.
But I have one 10/22 I know is a quiet performer and the accuracy one expects from a 10/22 (especially off the bipod) and I have one that despite being a bit longer is actually a bit “handier.”
I need to get to the range for a distance side by side.
