wear on CH latch - suggestions wanted

I have an upper that I don’t want to part with for various reasons. Today, the wear on the rear of the indention that holds the charging handle latch got bad enough that on the last round of every magazine, the latch would come loose and shoot back into my nose. not enough to be painful (yet) but pretty dang annoying.

When the charging handle is fully forward, I can pull it to the rear w/o touching the latch. the latch comes loose and slips right past the receiver with a very moderate amount of pull. (nowhere close to the normal force you’d use to pull the BCG back against the spring.)

if anyone has any idea how I could maybe rebuild that part of the receiver, or otherwise solve the problem without replacing the receiver, i’d love to hear it.

stronger spring &/or JB weld

or spend the $90 on a new upper

Replacing the receiver is best.

Sometimes if you find a steel latch (like on the PRI gas busters) that has a jagged edge is bes to dress is down with some wet/dry 1000 grit sandpaper so it won’t eat up the notch on the upper receiver.

I like the PRI latches.

I do a ‘melt’ on the corners and flats of mine and polish them with a fine stone.

I also lube the latch witha dab o’ grease like TW-25B.

This preserves the upper.

You could also try shooting nose to the charging handle.

you know, I didn’t even consider JB weld. That’s a really good idea. I was thinking epoxy or bondo or something, but I bet JB weld would work really well.

thanks!

I would get someone good to mig weld it up and carefully re-file it.

how bout some pix.?

sorry, too late for pics. it’s jb-welded already and hopefully will be set up so i can test it tomorrow.

let us know how it turns out… maybe an after pix

I’m very interested in hearing how the JB Weld works…I have a PRI Big Latch that is wearing an LMT upper pretty quickly.

Read my post above. It is easily fixed.
