Just heard on NPR that the Israeli state has relaxed gun control laws. They hope that an additional 30,000 licensed gun owners will be ready to help against Palestinian attacks. Considering that most of the applicants will be combat trained veterans, the impact should be profound. And yes, the subject line of this thread is from the government spokesman.
Wonderful idea, just decades late in its implementation.
I can’t believe that a country founded by survivors of a regime that was able to put people in ovens because those people had their guns taken away would have gun controls in the first place.

I guess I had this impression of every Israeli home having multiple military weapons and plenty of ammo and mags. I thought only the gas mask might have to be government issued. Guess I’m totally wrong, eh?

I would like to get Yoni’s take on this as well. I realize Israel is not the gun friendly utopia many would have assumed, I did think private Israeli citizens were more frequently armed while out in public. Lord knows they should be.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan announced new criteria Monday making hundreds of thousands of IDF infantry unit veterans eligible to receive firearms licenses.
In addition, Erdan decided officers and commanders will not be required to return their arms and weapons license after they are released from reserve duty.
“Many civilians saved lives during terror attacks and in an era of ‘lone terrorism.’ The more skilled civilians carrying weapons, the greater the chance of thwarting attacks without casualties and reducing the number of casualties,” he said.

Shortly after I moved from Chicago I remember reading an article discussing the shock and mild mayhem in Chicago PD when the oncoming shift found no murders were reported the prior 24hrs. Everyone assumed 911 call center went offline, that fresh bodies were yet unreported, hell had frozen over, etc. Turns out that for one brief moment no one was murdered. I remember quipping about how glad I was to leave the gun free liberal utopian war zone.
It is currently easier for an average citizen to own a handgun (not carry) in Washington DC or New York City than it is in Israel.
In Israel, to own a handgun, you must live in danger zones like the West Bank or a settlement, work as a public transportation driver, work in the diamond industry, or be a reserve NCO or higher. In other words if you happen to be a lawyer, accountant, or computer programmer who lives in Tel Aviv, you cannot get a license to carry or own a handgun. You can get a target shooting permit, but I believe you have to keep the gun locked up at the gun club. If you live in a settlement in a dangerous area you can get the military to issue you one longarm or SMG or M1 Carbine.
Geeze, for a “surrounded on all sides” country that not very long ago had the dangers of being disarmed by those who meant you no good intentions forcibly demonstrated on them, big parts of “never forget / never again” seem to have been forgotten.
It is also completely bizarre that they force military service from every citizen, but then don’t trust those same citizens to be armed. Israel is one of the few countries that could get away with “every citizen is an armed responder” because they are a largely homogeneous population that doesn’t tolerate a large degree of dissent or criminal activity.
The last time an Israeli shot an Israeli was when PM Rabin was assassinated by religious extremists. And it doesn’t seem like their current gun control laws prevented that incident, but “normal / sane” armed citizens might have prevented it.
