I’m sure there are many people on here that know the quality and reputation of 4Sevens and their lights. On candlepowerforums marketplace they have their own sub-forum. Someone has recently asked about a pistol light.
The owner of 4Sevens is David Chow. He’s an excellent guy and takes many ideas from his customers and makes them come to life. There have been many lights that started out as ideas from members of CPF. Now that someone else has introduced the idea of a weapon-light he might take interest. He’s already got some things in the works for the military.
I own several 4Sevens lights and all of them have been top notch performers.
If anyone else would like to see this happen please stop in and make your opinions known.
For those who might be interested David responded in CPF.
He said they have had one in the works for some time now and that it will be “unlike anything ever offered on the market”. That is all that he will say for now.
With the way he designs his regular and tactical programmable series it should be a nice light.
I’m hoping to get at least a couple people from the firearm community to drop by CPF and offer some input and helpful suggestions. David usually looks at the ideas put forth by his customers and uses the good ones in product design. I like the idea of a programmable pistol light that can lock onto either max or strobe mode. No more having to tap the switch twice to activate strobe. No more mode switching when using the light intermittently. Possibly interchangeable heads that use different emitters, a wide flood beam for on handguns and a narrower beam with some throw for long gun use.
The only thing I can say is my personal preference for a weapons light: no modes, no changes, just a momentary on switch. I personally want the minimum number of options possible.
If it were up to me I would probably want two models: a flood for a pistol and a longer, more “spot” one for a rifle. I have zero interest in strobing or varying light levels.
agreed. i was talking with dennis (member here) the other day and said that the only thing different that he’d like would be a dual-level momentary switch like some of the surefires have. press halfway for low level then all the way for high level. i can see how that might be useful indoors when you don’t want too much light when navigating, then the ability to go to full power to illuminate a threat.
Yup. I am a flashlight guy and think strobe is as cool as heck but in my own real world tests most suspects just don’t care and it is just one more thing you need to keep track of/train yourself to get used to. It also annoys your partners and the ~10% of bad guys that actually respond/fall over when hit with a strobe (or really any super bright light) isn’t a large enough percentage to justify it’s use to me, regardless of the immense entertainment value
Whereas a 2 stage low/high push through light is always useful for low light navigation or inspection with full power just a harder push away. However I believe Surefire has a patent on this…
IMOHO. YMMV. BNI. TANSTAAFL.
I really like Quarks and own several. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!
One BIG request: Make it fit in the same holsters for SF X300 lights!
From what I’ve seen of 4Sevens lights (I own two and bought a dozen for my group at work) I’ve been very impressed. Now that they’ve come out with that deep carry pocket clip, an AA Tactical might replace my Novatac as an EDC light.
I’d like to see a 4Sevens weaponlight, but I agree with the other users that eschew the bells and whistles light geeks seem to love. I’d like a pistol light with better switching of an X300 for the price of a TLR-1.
I like the idea of different models or heads for floody and focused beams.
Should a pistol light or something along that form factor be too hard, a more affordable Mini Scout (perhaps even a Mini Scout than runs on an AA battery!) packaged with a Gear Sector Mount would be a welcome addition to the market.
David and the rest of the 4Sevens crew are great both professionally and personally.
As for the lights, take a look at the Maelstrom G5! That’s what is mounted oh my m4 and I love it. I’ve carried it on duty and it’s perfect. No extra bells and whistles, and a much better light than lights four times it’s cost. And much brighter.
They do make a Maelstrom pressure tail cap switch thats digital unlike most the ones that are out there. I’ll post a few pics later tonight.
I should add that I know he has in fact been working on an amazing pistol light… One thing about the engineers at 4Sevens…they make amazing things, just hard to be patient…
Somebody wake me up when they make a model that competes with the X300 (or the 6P, frankly) and without all the geek settings. I agree with MM on the two-stage switch, and have been begging for something like that for quite a while, but more for rifle than for handgun.
Worth pointing out is that the G5 maelstrom may be “geeky” in its standard form but when you attach the tape switch to it, it automatically only has the high output mode and no other modes are available(for simplicity)
A little competition doesn’t hurt! There used to be a definite line - Surefire was WAY beyond everyone. But I have to say that the line is blurred now. Theres a lot of good lights there designed for use and abuse. 4Sevens, O-Light, Fenix are just a couple. Then you have places that build custom Surefires (oveready, Malkoff Drop Ins, Nailbender drop ins). I really like surefires and am waiting for Oveready to get some parts in to build one…
Honestly I think many people don’t understand the “modes” of the Maelstrom series. Yes, you can choose various configurations, but it’s still extremely simple (think K.I.S.S.) and just works well. You have a Mode A and Mode B. You can choose what each does.
For example, I’ve set mine to High and Strobe. This works well for a raid, but when shooting a night drill not on duty, I’ve set it to Strobe and Medium because I want to conserve power…
So yes, it is configurable, but still just an A and B set.
You still have to reach forward and twist the bezel. A push-through tail switch is still faster, simpler (KISS), and the only people I know that dick with any of the other modes are light geeks.
As far as strobe, I think it’s a terrible idea. I’m a lighting guy by trade and can tell you that strobes don’t fry anyones brain, and it’s just as disorienting to the shooter as the target Not to mention you’re now turning off available illumination when you need it most to acquire your sights and engage your target, which may or may not be illuminated and moving.
Hi/Lo is the most versatile. Sure it’s the least “cool guy” but it works better than anything else.
