Parents protest military statue
Parents oppose image, location of memorial

A group of Littleton parents is opposing the design and location of a memorial to a fallen local Navy SEAL, Danny Dietz, who died in combat in Afghanistan two years ago.

They say the statue, depicting Dietz clutching an automatic rifle, glorifies violence. In Berry Park, it would be within blocks of three schools and two playgrounds.

“I don’t think young children should be exposed to that in that way - unsupervised by their parents or any adults,” said Emily Cassidy, one of the mothers.

The parents have circulated fliers opposing the design and location of the statue at the southeast corner of South Lowell Boulevard and West Berry Avenue, in a triangle formed by Goddard Middle School, Community School for the Gifted and Centennial Elementary School.
They sent a letter to school board members, nearby residents, members of parent-teacher organizations and others to protest “the statue’s particular location.”

Linda Cuesta, the parent of a child who was at Columbine High School during the deadly April 1999 shootings, said that memory “colors everything in my life,” but she is sympathetic to the Dietz family.

“As much as it breaks my heart to do this, we have to weigh the effect of the statue in this particular place against the family’s feelings,” she said.

“Who wins here? It’s a tough situation.”

Dietz’s father said the family is devastated by the uproar.

“It broke our hearts,” said Dan Dietz, who still lives in the area. “My son was fighting for her freedom to do exactly what she is doing. She put my son in the same category as Columbine. How does she have the audacity to do that?”

On June 28, 2005, Dietz and three other Navy SEALs were ambushed by al-Qaeda guerrillas. Dietz, 25, severely wounded, fought off attackers for more than 45 minutes, allowing one of his team members to escape.

“The people who have never served in the armed forces are always the ones who speak the loudest against what the armed forces have done,” said Allan Stone of the Pat Hannon VFW Post No. 4666 in Littleton, which helped raise nearly $42,000 for the sculpture.

Cassidy said the opposition is in no way meant to offend the family or denigrate Dietz’s service.

“We have absolutely no issue with the family, and we have only good feelings for the soldier and what he did for this country,” Cassidy said.

Kelli Narde, spokeswoman for the city of Littleton, said complaints about the statue are arriving “at the eleventh hour,” too late to change the statue, which has already been cast.

“We’re proceeding with the plan,” she said.

“This opposition has come as a complete surprise; it’s been such a public process.”

Narde said Cuesta is the only person to formally approach the council about relocating the statue. It will be unveiled in Berry Park on July 4, the second anniversary of the recovery of Dietz’s body on a mountainside in Afghanistan.

Cassidy and Cuesta said the memorial was no secret, but the parents opposing it had no idea the rifle would be a focal point.

And while war memorials nationwide include rifles, swords, cannons and battleships, “trends are changing,” said Cuesta, who has advocated on behalf of stronger gun laws.

Sculptor Robert Henderson of Cañon City said Dietz is holding the rifle in a “parade-rest” position on one knee, somewhere between “at attention and at ease.”

He hopes schoolchildren could use it in their studies, in discussing war.

“Every piece that I make, somebody is not going to like it,” Henderson said. “Most of the people do, but you can’t satisfy everybody.”

So the people in Colorado protesting this memorial are putting a brave warrior who fought in the defense of his country and teammates on the moral equivalent as a small group of sociopathic deranged kids who indiscriminately massacred high school kids.

What the f**k is wrong with the left in this country. If we cannot discriminate between these two, then we cannot recognize evil. (please see my current sig line) The immoral socialist views of the left are one thing, but examples like this also show the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of their positions.

Nothing happens in a vacuum, and this type of repeated immoral anti violent philosophy will create a nation ready to be enslaved.

At our current pace to embrace this last PC interpretation of the world is proof to my prediction that The West does not have the will to win the GWOT and in 20 years the world only super powers will be China and Iran.

To steal a term from (I think?) Pat Rogers, I am going to defind PC as the Pussification Culture.

Was listening to Neal Boortz talk about this on the radio yesterday. Sadly, I think you are correct. We are doomed, as a country. At least if we stay on the course that we are on now. People in this country, by and large, are just messed up, and also just dont get it.
There really is nothing that can be said in regards to people being upset about a statue, of a Navy SEAL (or any other service member), holding a weapon (OMG a GUN!!!) Its beyond normal rational comprehension.

I read elsewhere the comments are running 100 to 1 in favor of the statue.

We aren’t doomed, these idiots have always been with us. We just did a better job not giving them a soapbox in the past. With the internet and talk radio, stuff like this that would have remained local now have international coverage.

The local media in this story said “Assault Rifle” five times in one story. There is no bias in the media my ass.

The community has supported the Dietz family and the city is going ahead with the plans to have the family place the statue in the park.

This shows the pussification of the American culture. These are the same lefties that don’t tell their kids where a hamburger comes from. Most kids don’t understand that we kill cows for food.

All we can do is raise our kids right and know that they will be there to fight for freedom in the future like Danny did.

It is trully unfortunate that that some people have forgotten how to be parents and believe that a statue of a true American hero holding a tool of his trade is in any way going to affect their children. Rather than engage their children in conversation and teach them of his and his team’s sacrifice, they would rather shield them of anything that will remotely remind them that this world is not all happiness and sunshine. As our country continues on on it’s current path, we will fail to defend ourselves against those who wish us harm. We are truly lucky that there are those out there that are still willing to sacrifice for the rest of those that will question the very act of their sacrifice.

He was a SEAL. What do they expect a statue honoring him to feature? A tray of cookies? He was a SEAL. In a combat zone. He didn’t go anywhere without his weapon.

We have always had, to borrow a phrase, hockey-helmet wearing, window licking idiots in our country. What I cannot understand is why we at some point in history actually decided to start listening to these people.

Despite what the prophets of PC say, not every point of view is worthy of consideration and not everybody deserves to be heard. The response to this merry band of hysterical idiots should be to inform them that they can take their objections, put them on paper, and then insert them into their rectum so their brain doesn’t get lonely up there.

“My child was in Columbine!”

I don’t care. If you are so in favor of gun control that a friggin’ STATUE can’t have a rifle without your panties bunching, it might be time to up the lithium prescription.

There used to be a concept called “shame” in America.

People used to be ashamed to voice such stupidity. For some reason modern idiots feel PRIDE in their stupidity. People who pull stunts like this should be subjected to ridicule and public scorn until such time as they either admit their stupidity and beg for forgiveness or hang themselves.

I don’t much care which.

The best thing we can do when people try this crap is to exersize our 1st amendment rights and shout them down as the fools and idiots they are. As I said, these people aren’t new.

Not tar and feathering them, thats new. At a minimum, they need Zumboing.

And while war memorials nationwide include rifles, swords, cannons and battleships, “trends are changing,” said Cuesta, who has advocated on behalf of stronger gun laws.

Damn straight they are, ask Zumbo about it. We are felling out oats and we are gonna let you idiots know it! You want to spew? So do we and there are way more of us.

But most important, notice the statue is going in and the morons lost.

For some reason modern idiots feel PRIDE in their stupidity.

Remember my one good quote:

“There is nothing more dangerous than an idiot with high self-esteem.”

John,

Shame is a learned concept. We have failed in our instructional duties.

I wish I had something profound to say, but I dont. Im awe struck at peoples narrow minded view of life and liberty or lack there of. Just cant see past that offensive gun shaped object. Dont walk down that sidewalk or drive down that street if you dont like it. If you dont like cuss words, dont say them. If you dont like heavy metal music, dont buy it. Heros deserve recognition regardless of form or appearance.

Okay, we need to convince AQ to send suicide bombers to the next DNC. Two birds one self-inflicted stone. These socialist idiots don’t realize that after the sheepdogs are gone, they will be first on the food chain for AQ.

“It broke our hearts,” said Dan Dietz, who still lives in the area. “My son was fighting for her freedom to do exactly what she is doing. She put my son in the same category as Columbine. How does she have the audacity to do that?”

EXACTLY how I feel about it. My heart goes out to the family of this man.

I think we are doomed actually. Ever walk into a Starbucks and notice the “male” youth?? Either they are mommas boy, tree huggin hippies or guys that find women repulsive. Are we going to get future Generals and Navy SEAL’s out of this group? I think not.

I have two sons. One will be a General the other a SEAL. Those of you with boys, make sure you do your part to raise sons that love their country and have the balls to defend it!

Grant, Starbucks is not the place to find those kind of men. It never was.

You are correct. It is however a good place to see what our young “males” look like.

It literally kills me to take a memorial and use a political process to deny the sacrifice of a hero for the very rights and protections they enjoy. How many children are not confronted with violence in their lives? The real question lies with how parents teach and mold their children to deal with the realities of the world. I for one would be proud to see the faces of those that have payed the ultimate sacrifice in our name be held as the heroes they are and defenders of the best country I have ever known. I think that if we do not know the cost we can never truly be the people, citizens, and inheriters of the mantle of freedom. We can not allow the cost to be denied for we will forget the cost and price of freedom and liberty. I am truly sickened by the response of the people who do not realize or accept the values required to maintain the USA.I am sorry for the rant but this actually physically hurt me to read this post.

I watched the “The History of The Hell’s Angels” on the History Channel a few weeks ago. Having a large number of WWII and Korean war vets, the Angels on more than one occasion would ride into Berkley, California and whoop the living shit out of the hippies leading the anti war protests during Viet Nam…

Times like this when it should be legal to bitch-slap someone(especially those tight jeans, pop culture, pin dicks at starbucks)…

Where are the Angels when you need 'em?

The left has / is the microphone, the camera, and the printed media. It seems like they speak for alot of the sheep but they actually don’t. They go to far. It was clear with hanoi jane. It is clear with damascus pelosi. It was clear with rather. It’s clear with msnbc, cnn, see B.S., pick a liberal rag and insert and rotate. Things are not always what they seem.

I’m local to Denver and I’ll give you the readers digest version.

In short there is a very small minority of anti gun women that are protesting. The community of Littleton is overwhelmingly in favor of the statue. Even the Denver Post’s rabidly anti gun editorial writer (who “contributed” to a news piece and got the ball rolling) is backing off now.

I don’t have a Harley, but I do know where we can buy socks and bars of soap in bulk.

Anyone up for a field trip to Colorado?
