Want to Build AR 15 for Target - long range paper punching.

Howdy again…

I was able to get my hands on a Lower, after election… with out giving up use of my arm or leg.
I planned on holding this for a rainy day and if I could ever find a LPK, building up the lower to learn how it all works.

As, fate would have it, I have horse traded into a complete lower with the A2 Stock and some upgraded springs. I go pick it up tonight. My question for you all is…

I want to disassemble the Lower back into bits, so I can learn and build it up myself. The lower was built by a Gunsmith so I don’t have any issues that he did it. I just wanted to be able to say “I build this…”

Am I asking for Trouble? Has anyone done this and had good results?
What tools do I need?

Thanks again.

Brownell’s videos will answer all your questions.
They’re free!

Check out section 7.

There is a second part that you can view after part 1.

Thanks for both of the video suggestions…

I’ll watch them when I get home…

I checked out the Brownells section, but it is for assembly…

I need to know if I am asking for trouble if I TAKE IT APART… I can follow the directions in reverse, but will I have to break something to remove it…

I assume with a good punch set, I should be able to remove most pins. I just wonder if there is a Full take down video, to remove everything from the lower.

hmm… dissassembly… i’ve never done that, aside from replacing a broken part. the only thing i can think of off the top of my head that might be a pain in the ass is the forward takedown pin. you’ll have to stick a needle or something into the hole and walk the spring back or something… or maybe just jam a 16ga nail into the slot in the pin and work the tumbler back? never tried it.

i assembled my first LPK in about 10 minutes and without instructions. the only problem i remember having was fucking up the finish around roll pins from not having roll pin punches. roll pin punches have a button tip, to keep the punch centered as you hammer it through.

and leave the springs on your hammer and trigger when you take them out… otherwise you’ll flip them around to and fro for a half hour trying to remember which way they go on.

Thanks for the input… I will take pictures of it all as well just in case for reference…
I talk with my gunsmith tonight so I’ll let him know what I want to do and make sure I follow any of his advice as well.

Well, I just put my 1st lower together the other afternoon based on web instructions and a short video. It is easy enough that I don’t think it is worth dis-assembling a complete lower just to do it. Maybe take the trigger and hammer out, then put them back in. That won’t hurt anything (unless you scratch the receiver) and you will learn how the fire control system goes together and operates.
