Walther PPQ- first impressions

Posted the same review over at PF, be interesting to see if others’ experiences here mirror mine.

Been debating picking one of these up for a while. Finally dropped the hammer and laid out the money for one earlier, followed it up with a range trip.

First I just want to say that my overall impression of this gun is that it is the cat’s ass.

It came with 2 mags, a test target and the usual assorted junk. As is typical with most German handguns the test target consists of one ragged hole at 15m. The magazines are steel with plastic baseplates and are very well made. They are coated and drop free easily. The bodies are VERY sturdy, no flex at all and the followers are very slick- you can load right up to 15 and it feels like you could fit 5 more in. Much easier to load than Glock mags. Additional mags are pricey, around $40-50 a piece but that’s nothing new to HK and Sig guys.

It has probably one of the most comfortable grips I’ve ever laid hands on. Much more ergonomic than the M&P (to me). It “points” very naturally, much like a 1911. I don’t find myself having to slightly break my natural wrist position at full extension like I do with a Glock. All the controls are very accessible and are mirrored on each side exactly which is a boon for those of you that are lefties. The slide release is a little stiff but I think that will change with some more range time. Some people have reported finding it difficult to not hit it while shooting but I didn’t find that to be a problem at all. I’m loving the paddle style mag release, very easy to engage with my trigger finger or thumb. I’ve used button releases all my life but after using the PPQ’s I don’t think it will take much convincing to convert.

The sights are the plastic 3 dot variety but adequate. Had no trouble putting 10 rds into the 10 ring of a B8 at 15 yards, got rained out before I could go to 25. I will say it is noticeably more accurate than my 19, I think I’ll easily be able to beat the 256/300 I shot on the last DOTW with it. People have reported any sights that work on the P99 work on the PPQ so steel night sights are available but nothing cool like Heinies, Hacks, Sevignys, etc.

One of the big gripes I’ve seen people have with the PPQ is the recoil. Shooting it and my 19 side by side it does have more muzzle flip but it’s a very brief, fast impulse that settles down quickly. I don’t have a shot timer so I couldn’t tell you what the difference in splits is but going by “feel” (yeah, I know) the PPQ sure doesn’t feel any slower and may in fact be a hair quicker shot to shot. Ejection is consistent as clockwork and strong, ran 200rds of Tula and Federal Champion 9mm through it with no malfunctions.

The trigger is… interesting. Think a fairly smooth 3ish pound takeup that suddenly turns into a glass rod 4.5-5lb break with very little overtravel. The reset is phenomenal, it’s so short that by the time you’ve realized you’ve started to let the trigger forward it has already reset itself. Very positive and strong reset. It is a very workable trigger, the take up and break are close enough in weight that it isn’t difficult to press it all the way through without disturbing the sight picture. Didn’t have any problems with snatching during pressouts and while doing a couple hundred dry fires later.

Overall if I can run another thousand or so through it without any issues I’ll have no trouble whatsoever throwing my Glock under the bus for the PPQ. It’s much easier to shoot accurately, has better ergos, a better mag release, a better trigger and is just as easy to hide. I look forward to putting more rounds through it and seeing how things turn out.

Good review. From my experience with the Walther pistols that I own (PPQ and PPS), they are more accurate than my Glocks and M&P’s. You also get superior ergo’s IMHO.

Thanks for the write-up. I picked one of these up from Grant a couple of months back but have only taken it to the range once and that was limited to a couple of hundred rounds. I was all set to buy a P30 but then got bogged down with trying to select which trigger I wanted. When the PPQ came out and it felt just as good, if not better, than the P30 and everybody raved about the trigger I changed my mind and bought one. For what it’s worth, mine ran without a hitch with good accuracy. The trigger reset takes a little getting used to, however.

I don’t have anywhere near the experience as most on this forum so I appreciate hearing feedback from those with a tad more bullets under their belt, so to speak.

Hopefully some others will chime in with their impressions on the PPQ. There have been a couple of threads in the past few months but it never hurts to stir the pot.

I’ll bite…As of yesterday, I now have just over 1700rnds on my PPQ.almost all my reloads, but I’ve run the gammut, Hard cast lead RN’s,124gr, and a few SWC’s(115gr), I found in the back of my loading cabinet that I forgot I had, I’ve also ran 124gr plated,JHP’s, and 147gr plated, JHP’s, all with No failures… Yesterday while shooting, towards the end of my session,I gathered up what remaining ammo I had, and I tried the PPQ at 15 and at 25yds in a effort to get used to shooting longer ranges than 5-10yds. I used a target I made using a stencil 5-3/4" dia, blank paper, and some black majic markers. I was using 147gr,115gr, JHP’s and 124gr plated loads, Disclaimer; I am NOT by any means a great shot at longer ranges, which is why I’m practicing it, Anyway, at 15yds I fired a total of 36rnds at the target, using 124gr plated, and 147grJHP I had 5rnds miss the black, 31 were on target…At 25yds, 39 rnds fired at target using 115grJHP 147JHP and 124gr plated. This was the second time I had shot this pistol at this range (25yds) I had 12 misses 27 hits…I know I need work, but this is’nt a bad start. all shooting was done offhand.
So far, My PPQ seems to do it’s best accuracy wise, with 147gr bullets,(either JHP’s or plated) 124gr plated also work very well. It did’nt seem to like the 115gr JHP load at all, shooting them at 5yds the groups were quite large compared to anything else I had brought… I have NO complaints about this pistol at all.The only mod I’ve done is put some Trijicon NS (for a P99) on it, this was very easy to do. I’d prefer Heinie’s but they don’t make’em for a PPQ, yet, and the Trijicon’s have a smaller notch in the rear sight. I feel the stock rear sight’s notch is a little too wide. I cannot say enough about the PPQ’s ergo’s, they are excellant, I love how the controls are laid out, very close to a HK, I still have a HK P-2000, and the first time I picked up the PPQ I felt right at home…

Good review. I actually handled one just today at the local gunshop. I was very, very impressed. Loved the ergos, particularly how slim the grip felt for a double-stack 9mm. The trigger was also very good. That distinctive reset is quite a bit better than that of the M&P, which is my current handgun of choice.

One of these just might be in my future…

The PPQ is very easy to be accurate with, however it’d be nice if there were more sight and holster options available. The Trijicon’s I replaced the factory sights with are OK, but not my cup of tea. Also, the only decent holster available is an RC with a 4 month wait (I’m a lefty).

My biggest gripe at this point though is the short lead of the factory barrel. I have to load very short for the PPQ or I’ll hit the rifling, whereas I can load longer for my Glocks. Now I have to develop new shorter OAL loads, particularly with JHPs, for all my guns so I can run one load for all of them to keep things simple.

We have in stock the Walther NS’s for the PPQ and Raven holstes for them.

You have left handed Raven’s in stock?

I thought you just had right handed versions on your website when I checked. The text read right hand MD cut.

I might. Will have to check.

Can’t find the night sights for the PPQ on your WS

There’s a shitload of holsters out for the PPQ. IWB, OWB, pancake, you name it.

I just ordered a slick ass Desantis leather OWB for it as well as a kydex IWB from PJHolsters. Here is a partial list…

several more…

There’s a 15 page thread on Waltherforums that specifically lists people who make holsters for the PPQ

They are not on the website yet.

That was my impression as well. Didn’t even think to ask.

What bullet/weight are you using? What OAL? I was shooting Hornady XTP’s at 1.100,(OAL from hornady) my 124gr plated are at 1.140, 147gr,plated are at1.150. I’ve shot some hard cast lead as long as 1.160,with no problems…

My favorites are the 125 gr Hornady HAP JHP (.356"), 125 gr Zero JHP (.38 Super - .356"), 124 Gr Precision Delta JHP and 124 gr Montana Gold JHPs.

The first two need to be loaded shorter than 1.120" OAL, and the PD at 1.110" OAL for my barrel and variation I get from the press. Montana Gold was out of the 124 JHP’s last time I ordered, so I’m not sure what OAL those will take.

Believe me, if you buy one, you won’t be sorry…My only other 9mm besides my P-2000, is a M&P…I honestly haven’t shot either one much since getting the PPQ …

Well, those OAL’s don’t really sound out of line… The OAL I used with the XTP’s are right out of the Hornady manual…They list 125gr XTP at 1.060 OAL… I’m not so sure you’re loading them “short”… Those OAL’s sound about right. Have you asked around over at Brian Enos’s forum? They have a pretty good reloading forum over there…Alot of folks use PD’s and MG’s. But, I’m thinking you’re right, you’ll probably have to use a shorter OAL for the PPQ, and use that for the Glock as well…

ETA: My Hornady manual is about 3yrs old, and it dosen’t list the HAP JHP, what OAL do they (Hornady) reccommend?

Has anyone here done any testing of the PPQ .40 yet? I know that this isn’t the most popular round here but it’s all I own. My preference I guess.

Thanks for the review of your PPQ. I was able to finger bang one at the local gun shop and loved the way it feels. The trigger also felt VERY nice. I am seriously thinking about picking one up.

I just started shooting the PPQ after having trouble for years trying to overcome issues with trigger control and pulling shots with my Glock 19.

When I switched to the 19 from an XD9 that I had shot well for years in competition, my shooting confidence went through the floor. No longer was I able to draw and know I could hit a small or distant target reliably as fast as I got a sight picture. Somehow, even though the sights seemed perfectly aligned, I would constantly print a primary group in the center of the target with an almost equal number of shots strung out a few inches to the left.

I simply could not overcome the Glock trigger issue, even after 2 years of practice and competition. The longer distance between the trigger and the part of the grip where the web of the hand rests simply would not allow me to get a solid grip on the pistol and still keep my trigger finger isolated from the frame during trigger pull.

The first time I shot the PPQ the trigger control issue was GONE. It was like magic. I went from shooting 5" slow-fire groups at 7 yards back to 1-2". The PPQ feels like a laser gun in comparison to my 19. Accurate one handed shooting is MUCH easier for me with the PPQ.

I found the mag release to be quite natural and didn’t find it to be a difficult transition at all.

I found the cheaper blued magnum research mags I bought to function well, but not drop free like the factory mags. I plan to locate the cause and remedy it.
