I picked up my first M&P today. It’s the VTAC model in 9mm. I found that the slide was marked “40” for some reason. I don’t recall seeing this on any one else’s pistols. Or maybe I just never noticed.

Oh wow…that’s strange.
Someone screwed up :meeting:
I don’t think it’ll effect anything, though, unless the slides are different dimensions. You might have a .40 S&W extractor in there.
I wonder if there’s a 40 out there with a 9mm slide - that might cause problems if the extractors are switched.
Stranger things have happened I’m sure. At my LGS, they have a 5" Colt “Commander.”
I think I’d be calling SW in the morning. That ain’t supposed to be like that.
I agree. I have both a 9mm and .40SW VTAC and they are both properly marked. Interestingly, my 9mm shipped with .40SW magazines (I didn’t notice until I got home) which were promptly replaced by Smith.
I’m really not to worried about it. It cycled rounds fine. I’ll take it out today and see if any issues come of it.
I’d still call them. Who knows, you might get a free slide out of the deal…
Called S&W and they have sent a return shipping label to me. The CS Rep said it was a miss stamped slide and that it was up to me to return it if I wanted to. I might as well get the “correct” slide on there.
If it shoots well and groups nicely, why send it back?
Just a thought.
Probably for the same reason that you would take a Mercedes back to the dealership if it had a Ford emblem on the grill - even if it drives great. ![]()
Fair enough, I can understand that. Good luck to you bro.
I posted this same thread over at TOS. Interesting how many “keep it” posts I got.
A common myth I keep seeing (if it in fact is a myth) is that a 9mm barrel will not fit in a 40 slide. Well I have living proof in my safe. The CS guy alluded to the idea that it was in fact a 9mm slide just mismarked. Might have to call someone higher in the food chain at S&W. As I am at this point more concerned with S&W QC than anything else. (I’m not perfect either and I can see where it’d be hard to miss two little "40"s stamped in one of a hundred slides that was handled that day.)
Just curious, does the label on the case say 9mm and the sn#'s match up? I ask because I could reproduce your photos by simply putting my stock 9mm barrel in my vtac 40. I shoot 9mm regularly this way (with 9mm mags).
This is obviously common knowledge that this works and i wonder if the guys at your lgs were playing M&P Legos when things got a little slow. Would it be possible that you got a 40 with a 9mm barrel? Or maybe a 9mm lower that someone put a 40 slide on?
just a thought, but probably more likely than the holy grail 9mm mis stamped.
I bought it from Buds Gun shop so YMMV I guess as I do not know thier practices with guns in the case or in the “warehouse”. The box does in fact say 9mm. I also have the spent casing in the box that is also 9mm.
For anyone who cares, I shipped the pistol back to S&W and they replaced the slide. Pretty good CS throughout the whole process. Now maybe I can shoot it finally.![]()
