For me I find the Magpul CTR and VLTOR collapsible stocks do everything I need. I really like the LMT SOPMOD stock but really don’t find it worth twice that of the VLTOR.
Agreed - I love the feel of the check piece on the LMT, none could compare but its not worth that much more especially with the new offerings from Magpul.
I’d have to ask also what type of rifle will you be changing, if its an SBR something simple like the VLTOR will do - but if you have a precision 16/SPR type rifle, the LMT might be considered to help with consistent cheek weld
My Company guns have mostly the Crane stock (with one Colt enhanced stock). Of the rest, the Magpul CTR’s and a UBR replaced all of the vltors.
There are a lot of things that drive selection, and the mission should drive the gear train- not the other way around. They are all viable, but some may be more viable then others.
I am a huge fan of the Vltor offerings. I have also spent time with the new Magpul CTR, and may use one on my next build. Until then, I currently have 4 of the Vltor stocks in my collection.
Pat… you would have an ACR stock. I should have dug into the Cranes pile of random when I had the chance.
My take:
-VLTOR is a cheek hair grabber.
-SOPMOD is nice for SPR/RECCE set ups or 14.5" & up, esp with 203 (balance)
-CTR looks to be good certainly more solid lock up than stock
The old, really old small stocks, non-ribbed, are nice on 10.5" semi concealed.
I agree 100%. My personal carbines have CTRs and my long range guns have VLTOR Clubfoot stocks. I like the ergonomics and integrated rubber buttpad of the SOPMOD stock, but don’t feel they double the value over the VLTOR. The CTR is perfect for a low profile fighting rifle.

My thing is I have a bad neck and excuse my pun its a pain in the nexk to get cheek weld on the standard 6position stock. I need something that will let me keep my head up higher.
This wasnt a problem until recently but is why I was forced into early retirement.
Since owning all three… I feel qualified to respond…
I loved the VLTOR when I first got it, Cheek weld was great. well built piece of Kit.
Then I got a SOPMOD that came with my LMT Lower… loved the cheek weld even more, and the butt pad is sweet…
Then I got the CTR… Cheek weld is pretty good, but not in the same class as the SOPMOD or VLTOR and no storage… but the buttpad is nice as well.
Like Pat always say’s… your mission drives the train… I like having Batteries in my stock for my light… so that narrows it down to SOPMOD and the VLTOR for me… I like he Cheek weld of the SOPMOD better then the VLTOR so for ME I like the SOPMOD best…
But the beauty of all three of those stocks, is you really can’t go wrong with any of the… pic the one that fits your needs the best at a price that also fits your needs and you have a winner.![]()
CTR, then Crane for carbines. I also like modified Sully stocks for 16" LE patrol rifles and the recent Colt A1 stocks on 20" guns.
CTR hands down – I ran a VLTOR in Afghan and a Crane the first time I was in Iraq – the CTR fits me a lot better - slides less off my CIRAS with the rubber than the CRANE did - plus is a cunt hair shorter than the Crane.
I gave away a Crane when I got my CTR here.
Doc,
In what way are the Sully stocks modified? Thanks.
I have all 3 of the aformentioned stocks, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. All are different, but all are good.
With what you posted above, I think the CTR is going work the best for you.
It’s a great stock, especially for the money, and it has the bonus of add-on cheek risers- in three different heights.

The only bad thing I can say about the CTR is no battery storage.
I’ll still buy more CTR’s.
I have 1 COLT 6920 Stock and LMT M4 stock than looks better than the Colt, But my allway go to for best cheek weld is my LMT SOPMOD.
I went LMT all the way for one of my rifles and now the others are getting ignored. I love the SOPMOD stock for just about everything. I do use other stocks but not the ones you mention as alternatives. Just for giggles I am looking at the duo stock for 9mm AR. Any of the three is a great choice but see what fits you the best.
Thanks for the info folks. I read on the Magpul website that the risers cant be used on the AR because of the charging handle? Im not really concerned with battery compartments as I have always just kept them in a pouch. Damn carbines are already to heavy ![]()
Thanks
I have both the SOPMOD and VLTOR stocks, and have used the M93A a bunch. They each have a niche. On my lightweight gun, I use a VLTOR because its a standard barrel and balances properly with that lightweight stock. On a heavier gun, I like the SOPMOD. After playing with one on a 10.5 Noveske, I bought my own. It really balances out the heavier guns. I bought an M93, which is a decent stock, and balanced my MRP out nicely. Its not the best carbine stock, but it was awesome for shooting prone, cause the cheekweld was always right. I no longer have it, but I will be getting a UBR when it becomes available, for a rifle, not for a carbine. I will have a CTR to try in the near future too, I think.
Agree w/ Gotm4
My DEFENDER 2000 M4 came with SOPMOD
I LOVE IT!!! ROCK SOLID !! BLOWS AWAY VLTOR
Now on my Bushy lower I switch to a VLTOR Telestock regular type
Very Nice Finish on the VLTOR ext
the coil spring seems ALOT stronger than most
Im not to thrilled with the FIT it has a little slop to it
If I had to do it over I would just buy a MIL SPEC Telestock etc!
Then buy a 19.99 SADDLE for it
I dont have the MAGPUL
I have a Crane stock on work guns and one of mine at the house as well, but have used Vltors as well and have a few of them. I like them both. I like battery tube/cheek rests, so I have only messed with the CTR a little.
