The VLTOR is straighter, truer and more rigid if that makes any since (the high qualities of billet) vs. a standard mil-spec forged upper by CMT. Both will work very well for most applications.
I just built a carbine and I used a Vltor MUR 1 for my upper reciever. I couldnât be more pleased with it. If you have the money I would recommend the MUR. My only word of caution is selection of a rail system. I went with a Troy free float rail system only to find out the anit rotation pins were set up for a mil spec upper. Not really a big deal just be prepared to remove a little metal with a file.
Depends on what youâre building. If youâre using an âaccurateâ barrel like a Noveske then the more accurately machined MUR makes sense. If you using a ârack gradeâ barrel then the MUR isnât going to offer much you can use except cool looks.
Ill be using a CMMG 16 inch midlength barrel. However i have not decided on the conture i want for the barrel. Im stuck between Govt Profile and Medcon barrel. Not exactly the most demanding precision barrel but i dont like Noveske barrels because of the color, if they were black id buy them.
the other problem with the MUR upper is finding them instock.
For that application itâll really be overkill, but if you like the look go for it. The Noveske barrels as well as any barrel can be sprayed with GunKote or Norrels in black.
If you true up the front end of a CMT receiver with a lapping tool and some other tricks you can get some extreme accuracy of of a mil-spec CMT receiver and if youâre using a scope mount like an Armalite or Larue itâll help you even more.
This upper (which I didnât lap, nor do any other tricks on) shoots .220" groups at 100yds with reloaded BH 60gr V-MAX. Itâs just a standard âWilsonâ stainless barrel in 1x9 twist with a .223 Rem chamber. I canât remember if itâs a Bushy or RRA upper receiver.
DUDE!!! C.Whorley, I have steered away from POF in the past months (2 months to be exact) due to QC issues. 2 friends and i all are having issues with new uppers (all second generation) mine in particular is under 200 rounds. My first generation POF is still running 100%.
I never did see pics of your rig but would very much like too.
id rather overkill the underkill. Looks like ill be trying to find a dealer that has the VLTOR MUR instock.

I didnât have anyone cut it especially for me if thatâs what you are thinking.
Frankly, I was very tempted to let it go at that since you didnât give me enough credit to think I might have enough ability to handle that task myself.
I did the cutting and grinding myself and Jay refinished it for me months later after the original tan DC wasnât holding up to the abuse the KAC clips put the leading edges through.
CMT upper on my Middy Terrorist Rifle. My thoughts are like this. Is the VLTOR upper nice Yup but for 229 you can get a K of 223/5.56 ammo or 2k of 9mm ammo. Just my 2 cents
Love the CTR stock it is very nice and worth it. Bought it from AIM surplus the same folks that sell ammo. Over all much better than the stock butt stock.
