I wonder if the Military will support this, just like we had to go through Black History and Woman’s History month for the last two months. I think April is also the month of the “soldier’s children” or something like that.

I support this as well, but I’m seeing a lot of negative feedback on this from reader comments in the Times Dispatch (the local Richmond Va paper). I just don’t get it, most if not all of the negative comments have to do with slavery etc… The CSA lasted all of about 4 years, while slavery lasted under the U.S flag for almost a hundred years, and in North America for about 250 years.
People see the Confederate flag and assume racism, slavery, and oppression and nothing more. Whats worse are the folks that wave the flag in bad light.
I just gotta know how can anyone who is a true patriotic american support this you do realize the the confederate’s were attempting to secede from the United States and become their own sovereign nation. While the nation we live in now may not be what we all hope for it. Ultimately it is the people’s responsibility to change and shape this country.
A true patriotic American would know they should’ve been allowed to secede. If it weren’t for the tyrant, Abe Lincoln, there would’ve been minimal blood shed and very few Americans killed by their own kinsmen.
People, I’m going to be upset if we have to lock this.
I know that feelings run high on both sides, but there will be no poo flinging allowed.

I have way to many responses to your reply but because I can be the bigger person I will agree that your wrong and I can’t change your opinion and leave it at that
People have the right to the government they want. The south no longer wanted to be under Federal rule. They had the right to leave the union. Remember the states created the Federal government. They have the right to dissolve it, too, and in this case several of the states wanted to leave the union leaving the states who wanted to remain able to do so.
The Civil War is what turned the states subservient to the Feds. It was supposed to be the opposite. Now look what we have. States have very little say in the federal government, and are slaves to whatever the feds do. Feds pass laws the states have to pay for. Just look at the full name of our country. United States of America. The country is a collective of sovereign states who created a central government to represent them as a whole, and do minimal things to help the states prosper together. We were never supposed to have a strong central government pulling the strings, and forcing states to do things they dont want to do besides what they agreed to in joining the union. We are so far out of whack its not even funny. Lincoln flipped the Founders idea of what the country was supposed to be on its head, and reversed the role of the federal government and the states.
While I am sure we can all agree slavery is wrong, and should have ended…we are all paying for it today with an out of control government who has turned us all into slaves of the state. Lincoln didn’t free the slaves. He paved the way for all of us to be slaves to the government.
Yes people have a right to the goverment they want but the people chose to be part of a union and by choosing to be part of a union the accepted the benefits and drawbacks of being a union, just because the majority of the union is doing something you don’t like does not give you the right to say well I liked what we were doing but now I don’t I wanna leave it doesn’t work that way. If you don’t like what the goverment is doing fight to change it from within that was the choicethe confederate states made when they chose to become part of the union

Y’mean like the American colonies were attempting to secede from the British Empire to found their own sovreign nation? gasp! By your own logic, all Americans should, to this day, be ashamed for not being true patriotic citizens of the Empire, or be ashamed for not being true patriotic Normans, and some American cultural subsets should even be ashamed for wanting to escape from Ramses II.
This could be cool, finding out just how far back we’re supposed to take our shame-spiral!
The Confederacy rates study, if for no other reason than it held some of the finest military minds of the era within its ranks. If ya wanna have an argument, let’s at least make it something edifying, and not polarizing pap masquerading as cogent thought. Like: Which battle represents the turning point in the Civil War (War of Northern Agression, whatthehellever!)? Antietam or Gettysburg?

People always have the right to the government they want. I don’t recall anything that says a state cannot peacefully leave the union when they feel the union no longer represents their best interests.
Saying the southern states had no right to leave the union is the same thing as saying our Founding Fathers had no right to leave the British Empire.
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes
Government gets its authority from the consent of the governed. The southern states, a significant portion of the country at the time, no longer gave the government their consent. Thus they had the right to abolish their ties. Anything less is tyranny.
There are certain people and political groups that will always look for an opportunity to “take things the wrong way” as publicly and loudly as possible, because doing so is the only thing that keeps them politically relevant and powerful. I just tune them out.
Remembering the Civil War and its history is much bigger than slavery. If the NAACP, etc. want to study and make proclamations about that part of the bigger picture, then I say go for it - it’s part of the picture and the whole point of this proclamation is to get people to learn and remember. But I guess they’d rather we just forget about the Civil War, or only pay homage to their version of what’s important. And we’re all racists if we don’t agree, of course.

Funny. I think thats what the union was doing. Denying the South a choice in what government they wanted.
Can you point to what article in the Constitution says once a state joins the union they cannot leave it for any reason under any terms?
