Anyone know if the DVD’s have different content than the Youtube videos? Was hoping they included some Streetfighter action… 
A quick review of the VTAC Drills DVDs, for the curious. [I’m a fan of Mr. Lamb, the training/experience background he comes from, and how he approaches teaching and learning, so I acknowledge some bias.]
In short, these were exactly what I expected – a slightly more complete version of the videos available on the VTAC Youtube site ( http://www.youtube.com/user/VikingTactics ). In these, Kyle and his intrepid assistant “Dan” run through carbine drills from the classic El Prez to the Triple Threat and Zig-Zag. Kyle explains the steps of each drill, the rationale/purpose of the drill and, occasionally, some pointers/tips to watch for as you shoot the drill. Even having done many of these drills myself in various training environments, I still learn something each time I watch these guys do them.
The good:
- These are great drills. This is what it’s about, and it’s there. You ordered a DVD (or two) of drills and you got it. They cover a range of skills, focus on core abilities and can be ratcheted up or down in speed and target distance depending on skill level.
- The drills are well explained, both in “how” and “why”.
- They are well demonstrated, often by both Kyle and Dan. Both are excellent shooters (as one would expect).
- Kyle is clear in his explanations and occasional tidbits of instruction. Except for the Product videos, there’s no “utilizing the weapons system”-type talk.
The bad:
- The first thing that leaps out is the video/production quality is low. Yes, it’s definitely “good enough” to show what it’s trying to show, but we’ve been spoiled by the recent high budget carbine/pistol training DVDs. People have widescreen HD TVs - DVDs should be produced with that in mind. This looks like Youtube mpegs burned to disk with a little production over top. A little bit of professional quality camera work and editing/finishing would make a world of difference for that initial impression, as well as getting people to re-watch them and keep learning (the more important point).
- There is only slightly more content than you can get online. Mostly, it’s extended explanations and demonstrations of the drills. There’s only a couple of drills (100 and 50 yard aggregates, for example) that I haven’t seen online.
- I would have liked to see a little more on the instruction side. I realize it’s not a teaching DVD set (though I hope there will be one eventually), but there were some missed opportunities to make key points.
- This is outside the expectations of the DVD, but ok, I’ll say it… I was hoping for some more “watch how it’s done” film sections like the shoot-and-move promo segment from Magpul. Maybe it’s just that we like to watch the pros in action as something to aspire to, but really, it’s fun to have a well-produced demonstration of folks like Mr. Lamb in action. Maybe next time? Some “Street Fighter” goodness even, to stick with the “drill” theme…
The bottom line:
For the price of a couple of mags of 5.56, you can get two DVDs worth of very good drills, explained and demonstrated by one of the world’s top professional gunfighters. If you’re expecting instruction or an epic film on carbine use, look elsewhere. For the price, I got what was advertised to me and I will use it to shoot better. At this price ($10/DVD) I would highly recommend this to anyone serious about carbine shooting. I’m happy with it and want more.
(Editorial note: Yes, I did watch these within two hours of getting them, but I have an excuse: When they arrived, the box and DVD cases were virtually destroyed in the shipping process. I wanted to make sure they worked. They ain’t pretty, but only part of the “Products” section of the first disk didn’t play and I can live with that.)

While in a VTAC 1.5 PISTOL, Kyle stated that he wanted them affordable for the troops going to the Box to give them a leg up on improving their shooting skills. I admire the gesture and if it can help a few service members come home, I’m all for it. It will also help in folks who can’t otherwise afford $50.00 training videos. The additional explanations would add context to the drills, and in their application in the real world. Even though I’ve seen the youtube vids dozens of times, I’d still buy a set, just to add to the library to gain the additional insight.
I agree. I watch the online videos often and incorporate them in my training, but would love them on DVD as well. For that price, and with the explanation provided, it’s well worth the cost. I’ll be adding them to my library.

Here’s a thought. Buy a set, learn the drills, and then add them to a care package going downrange.

Some of the same as YouTube, but much more in depth. They are really well done and Kyle is easy to follow. Plus you can’t beat the price. I would highly recommend them both.
Mr. Lamb is one of the best instructors this nation has to offer.
The video will help reinforce what you learn in his classes.

I’m still kind of on the fence here. Can anyone elaborate on how the DVDs get more in-depth than the youtube clips? Is there more in terms of the intended lessons learned or skills built, or what?
There’s a bit more footage per drill (get to watch an extra run or two with associated commentary), there’s a bit more content (review of the targets and what some hits “mean” as far as your technique) and a couple of drills not online.
Overall, I’d say this – It’s the cost of a couple of mags of 5.56 FMJ (less if you bought your ammo a year ago). For that, there’s no question for me – very well worth the content, even with the minor negatives noted above. I’d definitely do it again and encourage anyone else to too.
Well Team VTAC does it again, great stuff priced so everyman can afford their kit. Ok I now own both, list price under $10 each, great drills and cheep. Not bad in my book. And as usual Kyle and Dan make it look easy just the way Jordan made basketball look easy. The two problems I have are;
1- Why can I not hear the chickens from the farm next to the range…
How did they edit that out, they are omnipresent and at times louder than gunfire The chickens they are part of the overall fun.
2- Dan’s face book page was not listed, I want to friend him.
Has a thread on his Crocs been started yet? is it listed elsewhere?
