I have come to the conclusion that I do not really need a full sized VFG. I have considered a AFG but have ruled that option out. So I decided a stubby VFG will fill my needs.
I have it narrowed down to 2 choices. The first is the LaRue FUG. I like the ability to turn it into a full sized VFG if the need ever arises.
Next is the Tango Down stubby with the ADM QD mount. The plus on that option is the ADM QD mount. I have one on a ADM optic mount and really like it.
I would like to hear from people here who use or have used the above mentioned VFGs and give me your thoughts on them. Pros and cons.
no experience with either but I don’t see a need for a QD on a VFG. I’m trying to REMOVE ounces from in front of the receiver, not add them. maybe someone could tell me why it’s critical but I get along pretty well with my KAC when I need it…
Hey guys, depending on your Rail/Hand Guard setup, check these out,I found out about them a few weeks ago,(Thank Rob_S,he mentioned them in a previous thread) I have a Troy Extreme Rail & it is a awesome piece, small, light, easy to mount !!! If you have a traditional rail,(Quad) try one of the Gear Sector Hand Stops,it mite be what you are looking for !! http://www.mount-n-slot.com/
I would get the tango down stubby w/o QD it is lighter, cheaper and slimmer. I’ve had the TD full size and stuby with QD and the LaRue FUG all of them are high quality. Ask yourself if you need the QD I do not. The MOE VFG rocks too.
I am a big fan of the Troy Modular combat Grip. I run it in a stubby configuration on my Recce riflel, built like a tank, agressive texture, and can easily go from stubby to long in seconds. That said, I have put MP RVG’s on both my work rifle and a build I did for my wife.
I dislike throwlevers in this application. They add bulk, weight, and often sharp edges that reduce the number of potential hand positions, and offer nothing in return.
The Tango Down non-leverr stubby is my preferred VFG, but I’m messing with a Magpul RVG which has a lot of promise given the price-point and the ease with which it can be chopped down to minimum profile for the given user.
I’d suggest starting with the RVG as a proof of concept due to the low cost and then decide from there what you like/dislike.
I’m not a fan of the added cost, weight and bulk a QD feature adds to a vfg.
I do run a standard TD stubby which I like alot.
The Troy vfg is nice in that is is very robust and easy to swap from full size to stubby, but it is HEAVY for my tastes.
The Magpul RVG is (as mentioned) a nice option too. I handled one briefly but have not had the chance to shoot with one. It’s definitely an inexpensive and viable option.
I also like the Daniel Defense ConVert Grip in it’s stubby form, but it certainly isn’t the cheapest option.
I’d also search the EE for a good deal on a used one.
+1 on the Magpul RVG. I picked one up at a gun show last month for around $20. Solid piece, and I like the texturing on it as well. It’s not QD, but that wasn’t really a requirement for me…
I’m using the Troy grip in it’s stuggy version. I just compared the weight of the Troy to the Tango Down Stubby and they are within 2oz’s of each other. Tangodown says 2.56oz’s and the Troy in full size mode is less than 6oz’s. I would think the stubby mode of the Troy would be around 4oz’s. So weight is no big deal. One thing that shocked me is that Bravo Company advertises the Troy for $79 and Troy’s site has it for $59. Big difference!!
I tried one of the hand stops, it simply doesnt give enough leverage or gripping surface to replace the stubby grip. I use a very high grip, often with my thumb on top fo the rail. Even this way, I felt with the way my hand grips, the GS grip didnt provide enough purchase to be worth it. (Note I really like the low profile gear sector stuff and I use one of their light mounts.) I went back to the good ol’ Tango Down Stubby Grip (NON QD). As a previous poster mentioned, I dont see the rationale behind the qd capability. Another grip to try would be a cut down Magpul VFG. Why they dont offer it already cut down in stubby version is beyond me.
