Which two Vertical Battle grip are currently “top rated” and more importantly why? Thanks for your help.
Disclaimer: I am no tactical ninja. I am not even a “rifle guy” so take this for what it’s worth.
I have never really be comfortable with traditional VFGs. A buddy recently got one of these and I liked it. I bought one over the weekend and installed it. It feels much more natural to me. I have been taught the VFG is used more as a point of reference than an actual grip. This AFG works as both.

I’m sure someone will be along shortly to tell me the AFG is lame … and why. That’s OK. I need to know. So far though … I like it. I need more trigger time with it though.
I like the Tango Down grips with the ADM mount. They are easily taken on and off and can be adjusted to different rail sizes.
I think my next favorite is the Troy aluminum grip. It is very well made and again easy to remove if necessary.
I liked the AFG also, however it has been removed from my weapon. Last time I was at the range my friends told me that I would take my first shot with the AFG then switch to the magwell to hold my weapon. The AFG is very comfortable but I am used to the vertical type of hold and that’s just my muscle memory. Why change what’s not broken I guess. I have since switched back to the LaRue FUG with short grip base (that’s my favorite VFG). However for the price of the new Magpul MOE VFG you really can’t beat it. That would be a great place to start and see how you like it. They retail for under 30 beans.
SOS
I like the TangoDown shorty. Keeps my compact carbine compact
Another vote for the TD shorty, standard attachment method.
TD shorty here as well. I also have the Noveske QD swivel hand stop on one of my carbines, but the TD is much more natural feeling to me.
I like the TD Shorties, and the QD lever is great for guns that have to have accessories taken off regularly. I also like the KAC VFG, but hate the mounting/security method.
There are things that a VFG can do better than without or with a different device, such as one-handed shooting from support.
By the way, they are referred to as VFGs: Vertical Fore-Grips.
I’m a fan of the Larue FUG. It is a quick detach like the Tango Down. It has three different bottoms so you can adjust it from long to shorty…depending on your mood:laugh:
I’ve had my Magpul RVG on my issue M4 and my personal AR for several range trips now and I am very pleased with it.
I like the MOE on my MOE handguards it is light and cheap. I like the standard attachment of the stubby Tango Down. The QD is well made but it is expensive and got in re way of my light mount. I just sold a LaRue FUG it worked well the TD just works better for me.
Ditto.
I like mine, but the way it mounts is pretty stupid IMO.
Like the TD stubby, but have been using the Magpul RVG. Nice and light for the price, and I won’t feel bad if I chop it for a hand stop.
First choice: stubby version of same, and for the same reasons. Like usmcvet said, you may have to give serious thought to how you run ancillary gear, but that just gives you an excuse to buy and experiment with more stuff. Hooray!
Second choice: Magpul MVG/RVG. Not too long, light, inexpensive, blood-simple.
I like the Tangodown QD ones myself. Makes it a cinch to get on or off.
I like the plastic of the MOE on my MOE handguards. Seems to absorb the shock a little bit better.
I started out with a KAC copy to see if a VFG was something I wanted to use.
Now I run a LaRue FUG with the flush end cap on the bottom. You can remove/install it in a second and it really locks up to the rails.
I’m using the Troy VFG but I have it in the stubby configuration.
Another vote for the TD shorty.
Yet another TD stubby, just wish I had bought the QD version. TD VFG’s are durable as all get out, ran one on my SAW overseas and as much as it got beat to snot it kept on truckin’. KAC’s are nice too, except the previously mentioned mounting method which isn’t very durable- but if they’re babied they hold up well…
