I have just picked up a Vcog and I am really enjoying it. A great all-around optic and seems to be build like a tank. I know there are a TON of replacement mounts for the Acog/Vcog mount. Is this necessary? What if I just tighten it and locktite? I have it on my SCAR and it seems fine. I don’t mind buying a new mount but I don’t want to buy one for no reason. I don’t care about QD, I hardly ever take my optic off.
Nothing wrong with the factory mount that I know of, ran the factory mount on mine for sometime before swapping it out for a QD model. My only issue with it was the knobs, not them coming loose but them sticking so far out the side that I smacked my knuckles when going for my CH. That is what drove me to buy my Larue mount for my personal ACOG. The only thing I would do would be put a couple witness marks on the knobs so that I knew if they moved and rock on.
I would definitely use locktite on the bolts, but the factory mount should be just fine in terms of holding zero. I only swapped mine because I wanted a QD.
I cannot speak on the toughness of the VCOG mount, but assuming its the same as the ACOG/RCO; it’ll be fine. The M4’s/M16’s in the Marine Corps utilize the factory ACOG mount and in eight years I never witnessed one fail or come loose. I’m not saying that automatically means its good, but those rifles aren’t necessarily babied and see hard use.
When I had the OEM mounts, I would use Loctite and witness marks and always reverse the mount to put the knobs on the ejection port side. It kept the bolt release and CH free from obstructions.
I use Larue mounts now, and honestly I wish I just stuck with OEM. $120 for QD, but with the incredibly short eye relief I usually run them too far back to use a BUIS anyway.
