vang comp w/ flite control wad

hey guys. im more of a lurker here but i have a question that i cant seem to find an answer to. how does a vang comp barrel with ports do with the fcw loads from federal? ive read conflicting reports with some saying the groups get bigger on vang barrels with fcw, and ive heard some say that the groups are too tight with fcw and vang. ive also read the vang barrels with ports mess up the groups with fcw, and no ports are nice and tight? (all this was off a google search btw. i couldnt find much searching this site)

does anyone have a definitive answer? im planning on sending my 870 barrel to vang to do his magic, but about 1/4 of the loads i shoot is fcw. i dont want to pay for all the barrel work and have some loads shoot piss poor while others shoot great. if the fcw loads shoot super tight im sending the barrel off. if fcw loads shoot unpredictably im not. thanks for the help!

I used to own a Vang 870. I sold it after I got a 870P and started using Fed 00 FC. Basically, I got better results from the later combination than I did with the Vang. I found the patterning was tight (but not too tight) and more consistent with the 870P.

What is your primary use for your Shotty? If it is defensive, then I’d say save your money and buy more Fed Flight Control. IMHO, it renders the Vang back-boring unnecessary. I also don’t miss the porting, so that was a non-issue.

I have owned two shotguns, one an 870 express which I sent to vang comp to have the barrel modified and ported, and my current shotgun is an 870 police magnum that I bought from him complete with a modified and ported barrel. I realize a sample size of two is not conclusive but the flight control ammo was not adversly affected by the modified barrel. I patterned and photographed several brands of ammo and posted on shotgunworld in the tactical forum under the username terrymo and the title vang’d. I think the search engine may not find it because of the short length of the title and that the apostrophe in the title is not recognized by the search engine. I pm’d you the link since I do not want to cross post to another forum. Draw your own conclusions from the photos.

I did some patterning with a 14 inch vang, 18 inch vang, Benelli M4 with a IC choke and a 20 inch 870 with a IC choke.

Here are the results. I also tested Federal Flight Control wads.

I will post the rest of the pics later. Photo bucket is not working right for me.

the use of the shotgun is mostly a range toy, and for classes when i get off my butt and take some. i guess we can assume that the vang barrel does not adversely effect federal fcw. thanks for the post alaskapopo
