I have been reading about Van Compensating Ports work performed on shotgun barrel 15% on reduce felt recoil and in accuracy dramatic and would like to know if anybody has has this work performed by Van Comp and pleased with his work for $225.00?
Federal low-recoil oo buck with FLITECONTROL wad: you get reduced recoil and tight patterns without barrel modifications.
My work shotgun has the Vang Comp modifications and it works as advertised. With the VC work, all 9 pellets of our issued Winchester Ranger 00 Buck stay in a pattern the size of my fist at 15 yards. I don’t have the spread numbers in front of me, that is going off of memory. With an un-modded barrel, we were getting pellets off sillhouette at about 18 yards.
While the Federal FC ammo does this as well, I am not issued Federal FC ammo. The VC mods allow the same type of performance out of any ammo. With the FC ammo and the vang barrel, we were able to push our buck rounds out past 25 yards.
If you want tighter patterns and a more accurate shotgun then yes. I had a Vang Comped shotgun years ago and it was amazingly accurate.
If you are sticking with the same ammo, then yes. If you change ammo like underwear you will not be satisfied as the barrels are tuned for certain loads.
Yes and no. I have a Vang Comped 14 inch 870 and it does pattern well. However my standard 870 with flight control wads patterns about as well as the vang with standard loads. But the Vang with flight control is better yet. If you have the money yes its worth it but if you don’t you can do fine with flight control ammo.

Here is the gun.
That has not been my experience with two different vangs. I still own the 14 incher shown in the previous post and I owned a 18 inch vang I won at a LEO pistol shoot. I have pics with a lot of different loads of buck shot it does well with all of them.

I have had the same experience as Alaska with the two vang comp 870’s I have owned. I patterned buckshot from every manufacturer I could get my hands on from the worst to the best and saw an improvement in the pattern with every brand after the barrel was sent to Hans Vang. The improvement was far less dramatic with the TAP and Flite Control ammo. The shot cup technology in this ammo all but eliminates the need for barrel modifications if you shoot this buckshot exclusively. I am not particularly recoil sensitive so I cannot really speak to the claims of reduced felt recoil or reduced muzzle movement. I am curious about the remark that the barrels are tuned for specific ammo. If there is some information on this I would appreciate a reference.
Vang barrel work is the best I have seen.
It will not let you down.

He use to advise that if you wanted a barrel worked on he needed to know the ammo you would use in the gun and the range and pattern you were looking for. He would then tune the barrel to your specs. This info was given to me by phone when I spoke to him in reference to working on Dept barrels and some hunting barrels.
It appears he is now working barrels that allow a variety of ammo brands.
Good to know, I was not aware of that. Thanks
Thats strange because my 14 inch vang that is pictured above was done back in 2000.
I have multiple 14 inch Vang barrels, and am quite pleased with their patterning. My only suggestion, which I have learned the hard way, is to consider not having the short barrels ported. Once when I was shooting slugs, and had my support hand extended and braced over the seat of an ATV, my thumb covered some of the porting. At the shot, I thought I had lost a finger. My support thumb was blackened and painful, but fortunately healed without damage. Also, when selecting shot (I live in Alaska and carry Brenneke slugs as my standard load) to harvest a game bird, the short barrel/porting has caused my left ear to ring.
I had an 870P and a 590 done and the difference was amazing.
I’ve shot several Vang comped shotguns. To me it seems like a solution without a problem. I get nine pellets on a man-sized target at 25 yards with my standard off the shelf 590. A fist sized group at that distance seems to me to defeat the purpose of a shotgun. I also have no problem knocking down Pepper Poppers at 125 yards with slugs, so how much more accurate should it be?
VC seems to be all the rage in some circles, but its not for me. I prefer a standard, properly patterning shotgun barrel. I WANT my group to spread out at a reasonable pace. If I want a fist sized group at 25 yards, I’ll use an AR and just shoot real quick off hand.
I understand your point to a degree however there are some problems with your logic. In law enforcement you do not want a large spread with the shotgun because that mean possible pellets off your target that could hit someone or something else you did not intend to hit. However I prefer a rifle for gun calls. Meaning an armed suspect with a firearm. I use shotguns loaded with slugs for calls dealing with wildlife like bear and moose. Some people prefer the shotgun and for them if your going to use it in an anti social capacity you want tight patterning guns. Another reason for a tight pattern is increased terminal performance. The more the pellets separate the less effective they become so instead of having a fist sized wall of lead that does a lot of damage you start getting a more more spread out pattern of .32 acp level of power pellets striking the target with some missing. Your better off with all the pellets on target where you intended them to go.

Granted Pat. No argument. I guess it boils down to knowing your individual weapon and it’s intended use. I prefer my set up for 25 yards or less. If distances suddenly get longer than that, I can load some slugs. As a civilian it would be very unlikely that I would run into the same situations as a LEO with a shotgun. This conundrum is also a big reason why I have taken such an interest in ARs in the last few years. 0-400 yards with the same ammo and RDS simplifies a lot of things.
Thanks for the LE insight.
Its also the reason I prefer the rifle for most things.
I believe so, yes.
My 870P has an 18.5" barrel. I had the VCS with porting performed on my barrel.
This target was shot at 35 yards with Winchester Ranger 9 pellet 00 Low Recoil.

This target was pre-Vang at 20 yards, same ammo.

Recoil seems to be reduced greatly. I’m told by my shooting partners that the report is much louder when we shoot under our covered firing line, but they cannot tell the difference out in the open. I cannot tell the difference either way.
